Well, I think there aren't too many new shapes for a reason: we (mostly) got it right very quickly! I think most "deviations" in shape have been detrimental to the comfort and playability of the instruments as a whole.

Incidentally, if you are into those sorts of things, I really have to recommend the Byrd Super Avianti to you. He is the only guy who I can say has managed to improve the guitar by choosing an unconventional shape, and the instruments are excellent! They cost quite a lot, though!

There's just soooo many options now that can be had within the general "superstrat" realm that it's really hard for me to think of the format as confined in any way.

Just because it's somewhere near strat-shaped and has a double-locker doesn't mean it can't be drastically varied in many other ways.
