Uli John Roth

Re: Uli John Roth

Uli is der ubermensch.

Go ahead, try playing "Sails Of Charon"... try. I dare ya.

It's been 40 years. I am certain that numerous teen bedroom guitarists on YouTube can nail much harder solos than that one.

C'mon dude, it's shred guitar not Coltrane. How hard could it be? Sounds to me that he played in Phrygian.

Now try play a solo over "Giant Steps" with your green sparkle SG. I dare ya.

How hard could it be?

With a statement like that - 10 bucks says you've never even tried a single note of it on your guitar.

You'd better stick to the easier stuff. :bigthumb:

Did your mum drop you on your head when you were a baby?

So she did drop you?

Right at the one yard line.;)

I really don't understand why anyone complains about derailments and going OT. It's what we do.

Re: Uli John Roth

I made myself a uli inspired guitar awhile back. And no LLL i can't play uli note for note tone for tone cheesy mustache for cheesy mustache. :biglaugh:

Neck pickup simulator working off the bridge pup and all. Not perfect but it's my favorite guitar to play.

Re: Uli John Roth

Nice guit Kramer! Looks as big as a bass. Must be fun to play :D

haha..I can't even get the that S.O.C riff down..forget about the solo :laugh2:

Love Uli Jon Roth, his stuff with the Scorps is just fantastic..Sails Of Charon is one of the best songs ever written..period! But a lot of his later solo stuff with his Sky guitar is pretty sweet too. (Metamorphosis, Electric Sun-Firewind/Earthquake, Sky Of Avalon, Under A Dark Sky) ...his playing & composition (not to mention.. tone!) is otherworldly on all of them AND he's been touring lately with the incredible John West who's the greatest classic rock/metal singer you never heard of. Would have loved to have caught that live :(

I'm just a newb and watched his rig vid, and the song (sorry don't know) he played had an intro that sounded like violin and that got my attention, so I watched the whole show. I'd heard of the Scorpions, but never listened-always listened to stuff 10 years older than whatever time it was. Never saw MTV, only saw YT 3 years ago, so I'm playing catch up. That Sky is one of the most beautiful guitars I've ever seen-this was 2 days ago. God I'm old. I'm like, all Dead and Little Feat.

Re: Uli John Roth

hello resurrection time, cause I need you guys' help.
I am working to play the solo of this song "Sails of Charon" and I have the following problems :
1) I got the SC strat, white, maple, I am OK in the looks dept, still working on the tone. I know he used wah pedal but I can't seem to nail this no matter what, but my hardware is very limited, just a poor me-25 boss multieffect ...
2) the technique. This struggle I must fight alone I guess.
3) I am curious about how the hell did he manage to have no hum/noise with those single coils. If I turn on the compressor or the boost/overdrive or even the wah then noise gets out of hand. If I increase the noise gate settings then the attack is heavily affected and it sucks. Ok, I could always go grab some humbucker guitar (I have 5), but still I'd like to know how all those ppl (e.g. Rory Gallagher) managed to tame the noise.

Every time you hear noise with your single coils, start slowly spinning around in a circle. 9 times out of 10 you'll find a very specific angle that you can hold the guitar at that eliminates most of the noise. The other things is simply to use less of most of the effects than you're using. A bit less gain, a bit less compression. Most of the time there's no need at all for a noise gate.

Re: Uli John Roth

Yeah I know that. In where I live there is a spot (in the morning) that I have no hum no matter the guitar. Unfortunately when I get home at night the hum is just too much to handle no matter the angle. I'll work more on the tone.
