Ultex Jazz III Picks, anyone tried?

I've been playing a number of Dunlop Jazz picks, all styles including Tortex which I like very much. I was wondering if anyone has tried the Ultex Jazz III's. Kinda of hard to find locally.

Re: Ultex Jazz III Picks, anyone tried?

yeah, they're great if you like the normal Jazz III's. Better grip, fuller sounding bass and more clarity than the black or red Jazz IIIs. Also, the ultex material is a bit harder than the plastic used in the black/red Jazz IIIs, so the ultex ones don't wear out and get a dull edge as fast as the plastic ones do.

Yeah, I'll have to order some to try them out, local GC and other music stores don't stock them.

Re: Ultex Jazz III Picks, anyone tried?

Pretty much what CTN said. BUT the only reason I haven't clicked with em is the extra pick noise that comes with the ultex.

I just love them (the translucent yellow ones) ....they're the only things I use these days. I actually find that they have a pretty soft (non abrasive) attack and produce a slightly darker fuller sound compared to the usual (red) JazzIII's.

@TheLivingDead: Dude...you should maybe try using them for about a week first. That's when I think they start to sound/feel their best.

I ordered some a month ago and from my experience they have a more fuller round tone to them. They take off some treble but they definitely sound great for jazz and lead work on songs but for general all around playing and rhythm I would not use them. My main go too picks are a .73mm ultex sharp and a purple dunlop tortex 1.14mm. If im need to make my lead stand out and sound full and thick ill use the Ultex Jazz 3 or just need a jazz tone.

Agreed on both points. They're my favorite picks.

I've got both the yellow ultex jazz III's and the thicker, more sculpted black ultex jazz III's.... They're awesome picks, but for me the carbon fibre maz grip jazz III's just win..

My best advice is to buy a selection of all the jazz III picks, try em' out, and decide which suits you best.

Re: Ultex Jazz III Picks, anyone tried?

Jazz IIIs of any kind are awesome in my books. I like the feel and grip of the ultex ones the best, but they seem to wear out the fastest.

Re: Ultex Jazz III Picks, anyone tried?

I tried an Ultex Jazz III 2.0, and it was really good, but I can't part from my Tortex Sharps.

Re: Ultex Jazz III Picks, anyone tried?

I've converted to regular Jazz IIIS. I tried the Jazz III ultra but I didn't like them that big. I just some Jazz III Ultex and Tortex Pitch Black to see how I like those.

Actually, the material that the Jazz III Red and the Black Stiffo is Nylon. I don't think you can dull out the edge on a nylon pick faster than Ultex. Actually in my experience it's the other way around. The Ultex dulls and smooth out faster than any nylon pick I've ever used. Compared to Dunlop's Tortex material, the Ultex is much brighter. The problem with picks that are made with a harder material like the Ultex is that when they wear, the edges becomes smoother and smoother and it will come to a point that the sound that it will produce will become dull and lifeless. The upside to this type of wear is that the pick will glide off the strings and make you play faster. Feels great but unless you're a hardcore Jazz musician that looks for that certain dull smoothness, sounds crap to me. It sounds like putting your guitar's tone control to 0. I noticed that many players always go for what feels best when it comes to picks, I always go for what sounds best for me and could care less about how it feels or what it's made of.

I've been using both Jazz III Max Grips and Tortex Jazz(both medium and heavy) The Max Grips have a fuller tone to me, but with the Tortex Jazz I seem to be able to play faster. All in all, I am a convert to the Jazz size picks. Going back to regular size picks seems cubersome.

I love ultex jazz III picks! I've been playing nothing but Dunlop Jazz III's for over a decade. The ultex material works best for me. Try them... What's the worst that can happen? Not like them? Feel like you wasted $15.00(for the three variations)? 3 variations = regular 1.38mm yellow, 2.0mm "black", & 1.5mm Petrucci signature.

Maybe it comes down to differences in picking styles or strings or something, I dunno. In my experience, Ultex wears a lot slower than the black/red Jazz IIIs. And that makes sense too. Harder materials should wear slower, not faster. Played Jazz IIIs for years and years before switching back over to Tortex jazz picks.

That's where I'm at. I totally converted about three weeks ago although I've been toying with them for years. Even after a few weeks it's hard to go back to a bigger sized pick now. I played with the Tortex Jazz III last night and LOVED it. I'm going to try the Ultex tonight.

Re: Ultex Jazz III Picks, anyone tried?

Yup, Jazz III Ultex are my official picks.
The black Jazz III have a softer material that wears out easier than the Ultex.
Also, the material of the black Jazz III, that has more grip to the fingers, has also more grip for the strings and, therefore, Ultex feel speedier, IMHO.
Anyway, this is the size and shape of pickups that I really love. If there is some other models of other materials with same shape / size / stiffness, I would probably check all them but, by now, Ultex hands down.

I've been trying out my Ultex J3 picks but still prefer a regular size picks for my fingers and playing.
