Warren DeMartini's Guitars?

I was always under the impression that the snakeskin guitar was purely a performance creation? Could be wrong though. I did read an OLD GFTPM article w/ him not to long ago where he talked about his brass sustain block mod he performance make him. Saying it that it really thickened up the low end of a floyd equipped guitar......

I'm still wanting to try this but.....

IIRC the Snake was a Charvel that leter received a Performance neck ;)

Re: Warren DeMartini's Guitars?

FWIW Jose Areendondo (sp) also modified amps for Steve Vai.

Probably a ton of others as well....

BTW....I'm not that much into RATT or alot of the bands or artists being mentioned but I'm enjoying reading about them and the techniques they used.

Re: Warren DeMartini's Guitars?

I remember reading an article with George Lynch where he mentioned his attempts to steal Dimartinis marshall. He said it put out 180 watts which leads me to beleive it might be a marshall major.

Re: Warren DeMartini's Guitars?

I remember reading years ago- the snakeskin guitar was a Charvel guitar body he got from Grover Jackson. He glued the skin on the guitar himself and made a complete mess, so he had Grover start from scratch. Grover glued a new piece of snakeskin on the body, but it muffled the sound too much, so they had to remove some of the skin that was in the bridge area, which improved it a little, but it was still muffled.

Maybe so but it's not unheard of for "100W" Marshalls to put out 150W when distorted.

Re: Warren DeMartini's Guitars?

shoot didnt know about Vitto Bratta there guys.
just wanted to make some humor ya know.

thats too bad cause Bratta was pretty damn good.

Yeah Warren's Marshall was supposed to be a SL100. I think it is a bit modded as well.
Too bad the singer had to mess up all those great riffs and solos Warren played.

What the heck, didnt Warren know that the singer sucked??? I mean it was cool in the beggining, cause they were, you know making a start. but after that why the heck didnt he fire the singer or cruise???

Re: Warren DeMartini's Guitars?

Couldn't fire Stephen because it was his band to begin with. Warren was the last one (or second to last) to become a member of the band that we came to know. Jake E. Lee was the original lead guitarist and when he left, he recommended Warren for the position since they were buddies.

Re: Warren DeMartini's Guitars?

The last incarnation of Ratt had Jizzy Pearl on vocals, Robbie Crane on Bass and John Corabi on Rythym guitar.
Warren was one of the big players in the 80's and famous for being unable to read a single note of music. Definately a favourite of mine, although he did himself few favours when he played with Whitesnake in 1994 - I've got a couple of live boots and he just doesn't fit in although he's way sassier than Adrian Vandenberg.
I was always led to believe that George Lynch's favourite amp was a purple plexi that belonged to Richie Fliegler of Marshall that George tried (and failed) to buy on numerous occasions, but Richie always loaned it to him for recording:confused:

Re: Warren DeMartini's Guitars?

It is funny, I have the live vid from the Rock Palace in '84 and there are AOR's are behind Warren, and in the Round and Round vid the AOR's are in back of Robin.

You will find many, many links between George, Warren and Jake. Like George actually getting the Ozzy job after Randy's death, only to give it up (Oz was likely a drugged-out mess), and his bud Jake got the job.

How about Coverdale wanting Jake for Whitesnake before Via ?

Anyway, It is good to hear Zerb mention Warren has a few Charvel models again. Fender needs to draw more of those guys home, where they belong. (After this posting I'm off to find Warren's Charvel's)

Warren was playing Performance Guitars for a long time. Warren, George, and Jake, 3 of my top 4 living players.

Randy actually spoke about George on a few occasions. I have heard of what he spoke of, but have never seen it written. It would be interesting to see exactly what he said, if anyone finds it. ;)

I think I missed out on Warren DeMartini's total style a bit. The FM radio singles were great. I saw Ozzy/Ratt play two nights in a row in Long Beach, 1984. Warren was smokin' f'n hot! The band really thundered the second night!

What I remember (uhhh, this is two random brain cells colliding...maybe never happened :eek13: ) was a guitar that Warren played. It looked looked a heavily three dimensionally carved skull and cross-bones. Does that jog any memories out there?

During the guitar duel portion of each show, Warren (the dark haired guy) whooped the guitar-@ss of the blonde dude guitar player (reminding me of JP's Tipton/Downing).

It was a great weekend.

George Lynch taught at the music school Randy's mother owned.

Yes, he was picked by Randy to replace him when he went out with Ozzy. It didn't last long because he and Wild Mick Brown, his bud from the Boyz, were drawn into Dokken soon after.

I believe that 3d guitar was one of George's ESP's Sludge. Robin, no slouch in his own right, and Warren used to do a little harmony bit offset with a guitar duel thingy. It is pretty cool to see on vid. I would like to see Warren without Robin to know that he is getting along ok. I would hope the magic is still there.

Man, that was a friggin' magical time. When I think of Jackson's and Marshall's. I think Ratt first.

I liked the Ratt Cd from '99. I lost it though have heard it since college

Be glad you lost it... the CD that is... not your mind.

But, of course listening to that disc at all... one has to wonder... j/k! :)

Re: Warren DeMartini's Guitars?

well i know that this might piss some off but i think that these guys get endorsements to make some bucks.

i really dont think that after all these years of playing Performance guitars, Warren went to Fender cause they are that much better or anything.
And i dont think that there is anything wrong with him making a few bucks either from endorsments. But i really dont think he went to Fender just cause they make such awesome guitars compared to what he was playing.

Well, by his own statements years ago Warren only switched to performance because Charvel wasn´t making Strats anymore.....

Jackson/Charvel endorsements are a bit different than most other companies...instead of having money coming out the wazoo and shoving it up the endorsee´s wazoo, J/C Endorsements have always been pay to play.... you´re getting nothing free, just somewhere along the lines of 50% cheaper compared to list. That´s one of the things that makes J/C different... of course he probably gets royalties from the sale, but it´s very likely he still has to pay for his own personal axes (Collen, Mustaine, Friedman, Bond, Wolbers and Beatty all did/ do, as did I years ago...)... Charvel has prided itself for over 25 years in being able to say "We don´t need to pay them to play our guitars" ;)

But I agree, it has to do with money, ie. more guitar sales due to the association of person x with brand y.... But that´s what we call "doing business", specifically "marketing", and it´s not any different in any other industry be it toothpaste or Rocket Engines...

I also think he's still playing performance guitars. I know just not to long ago they did a limited run of Warrens guitars. I think XSSIVE told me this, maybe he'll pop in and clarify.

FWIW, I'm really starting to miss the talent that alot of the guys from the 80's had. The getup was cheesy, but there were some seriously skilled musicians from that era that I don't forsee ever beeing topped. At least not anytime soon.
