How about Coverdale wanting Jake for Whitesnake before Via ?
That would've been a great fit, IMO.
"Slip of the Tongue" was produced like this:
Coverdale & crew record ALL of their parts, THEN....
.....the album sits in Vai's household recording studio while he records his guitar parts all by himself.
I thought it was semi-cool back when I was 14, but really, Vai was a horrible fit for that band. I could've only dreamed of Jake E. Lee being in that band. I guarantee you he wouldn't have made the same sh*tty demands Vai did while recording.
In fact, even at age 14, I didn't believe for one f*cking minute that Vandenberg's injury was as bad as they made it out to be. My suspicion is that Vai said, "hey, I'll come on board, but ONLY as the sole guitar player. And all my parts will be recorded in my 64 track home recording studio".
I think Coverdale recognized that Vai was practically a "brand" at that point, and jumped on board, which is sad. Vandenberg was allowed to tour and make videos, but really, it was the Steve Vai show, which is too bad.
......not that I feel bad for Vandenberg, since neither he nor anyone in those 1987 videos played a single lick or drumbeat on that album either. Coverdale fired everyone in the band immediately after recording their best album. Then hired a whole new crew for the videos & tour. Too bad.....Sykes was sort of Zakk Wylde before Zakk Wylde.
In fact, for as long as Vandenberg was in Whitesnake, I'm not sure he ever recorded a note, outside of the "Here I go Again" solo.
Getting back to what got my blood boiling.......I think Jake had an incredibly organic tone on that first Badlands album, and was really hitting his peak. Would've loved to have heard him record with Coverdale.
