Yeah, it's done! As mentioned in some older threads I've been working on restoring an 80's Hondo charvel star copy and I think it's finally finished!

I don't know much to say, but I'll try and say a few things about it.

In the Hondo, I got some GFS crunchy pats and they really do sound great! Clean or dirty actually! The bridge is pretty cheap, I'll be getting a GFS strat style sooner or later.

And the Hondo even has the original strap it had in the 80's! Even if doesn't match it so good anymore!

The only problem I had in this whole thing was the neck. It had a pretty bad reverse bow to it.

After clamping it, steaming it, cooking it, and letting it sit there for awhile, it's back to having the correct bow but I'm still ready to buy a new neck if this one reverses again.

Actually, I keep meaning to ask a question about getting a FR.

If the standard strat trem fits, how hard would it be to get a non recessed, or recessed, FR to work? I really have always wanted a FR trem..

The other problem is the price. Haha.

It's relatively easy.

StewMac sells a template to help you locate the holes for the posts. There's two different posts types: Posts that are the screw themselves (old style) and press in bushings (new style).

The hard part is routing the nut area for the locking nut, but given the right tools it's not that difficult. Especially nice is the fact that you can top-mount the nut these days, so you don't have to drill through the neck for the through bolts.

You might need to shim the neck a hair, too, unless you luck upon one of the weird thin-plate German Floyds from the mid '80s. I've got one of those on my orange Strat.

A Floyd Rose Special goes for under $80 and is a pretty nice trem.

Thanks! Would you recommend buying used or new?

Also, out of curiosity. Can you use a FR without a locking nut? Just wondering. :33:

Musician's Arsenal sells FR Specials in all different colors brand new with all the hardware you'd need.

You CAN... However, it'll go all out of tune with any serious use. There's a couple times I'll dump the bar as low as I can get it either to make weird noises or to get that slooooooooooow rise on the low E. The strings turn to spaghetti and the locking nut keeps them perfectly in tune. Without a locking nut they'd probably all fall out. LOL

I checked Musicians arsenal, and after shipping it would be cheaper to get it from GC if it comes with all the same stuff. Is this everything?

Oh and R2 nut or R3?

If I end up getting this, it's going to down the road but I'm now kinda planning on it...

That is everything. The nice thing with Musician's Arsenal is that you can pick the nut size. Measure up the neck on that thing (unless you're going to do a neck swap for the Floyd) and see what you need.

Is the only difference between the R2 and R3 the 1mm width?

It's approximate... Think of R2 as vintage Fender width (1-5/8") and R3 as Gibson width (1-11/16").

If the neck is a more modern 1-11/16" you'll need an R3.

Alright, the neck is already bowed back.. We've put in the clamp again and we're going to leave it there for a few days.
