Well looky here (new Mesa MK Series)

Re: Well looky here (new Mesa MK Series)

Just saw this. One step forward one back. Bigger (slightly) tranny... to accommodate 4x el84. Doubled down on the el84s. Dang. Really hoped this was going to be 2x 6l6. Cool foot-switchable boost/2nd master/ more knobs! thing. Available as a combo but I don't know if I buy the "cheaper plywood sounds better" argument.
Mark V 25s might drop below $1k on the used market as a result, so that's a good thing.

Yeah for me, I think a combo version of the Mk V 25 would have been sufficient without adding the additional power. It's still very cool though.

Re: Well looky here (new Mesa MK Series)

I kinda expected this, and I really like the concept. The extra power gives it a bit more versatility. While I love the sound of a big amp, I've found over the years that a 35--50-watt amp and works pretty well for most club gigs.

I've got amps from my 112 DC-3 (35 watts, Dyna-Watt) and the 30 watt Class Maverick 212 on the low end. The big half-stack is a 200 watt Mark III beast, and the Mark III, IV, V combos have a whole range of power settings, from 10 watts to 90 watts. And I have a nice selection of cabs, so I can cover most any venue.

And I just complicated things even more...three weeks ago, I managed to get the deal of a lifetime on a used Mark V:25 full stack. It sounds fantastic, and equal to the big V in a simpler format...but it does have a different "feel". I really haven't had the chance to gig with it yet, or fully wring it out, but it should be loud enough to use for many of the gigs I do.

So as much as I love Mesa amps, this is one I probably won't be pursuing, not because I won't be lusting for it (I will!), but because I already have several amps in this range.

I can't wait to try one out!

EL84's DO NOT make a proper high gain amp. That's the joke about the mini-6505, the mini-Recto; when you palm mute, you sound like you just stepped in ****. I'll stick to 50-watts and deal with 2xEL34's.

Re: Well looky here (new Mesa MK Series)

I too think it would have been better w/ 2 6l6s, set it up like the 45w and 10w modes of the big mkv

Re: Well looky here (new Mesa MK Series)

I agree with you guys about the 6L6s. From a pure product differentiation stand point, I don't think that 10 more watts and nothing else is enough of a differentiator from the V 25. (Unless they discontinue that) If they would have made this one 6L6 based and maybe 45 watts, I think it would have been better. The good news is that the used price of V 25s will be pushed down now. (I hope....)

Re: Well looky here (new Mesa MK Series)

If you want to go the 2x6L6 route, try an Express 5:50+, or some of the older older amps like the F-50, DC-5, .50 Cal., Nomad 55, etc. Most of the bigger 4x6L6 Mesas allow you to cut out two tubes for 50-60 watts. Even the Mark II, III and IV amps have different power levels up to about 85 watts.

After reviewing Mesa's lineup, I realized that they have a bunch of 2xEL84 amps and several with 2x6L6s, but the only other 4xEL84 they offer is the Vox-flavored TA-30. I know Smith really likes '84s, so this version of the Mark V seems to fit right in with what they've been doing.

And I can tell you that my DC-3 V-30 combo on top of my Mesa 112 EVM Thiele cab does palm muting quite nicely, thank you. Definitely not wimpy.
