WGS Veteran 30s are here!

Re: WGS Veteran 30s are here!

They are brighter than V30's, but the Retro's high end isn't offensive. It helps with single note articulation and cut. The Retro's mids are less upper mids emphasized too. Still present and can easily be heard, just not knawing at your ear like V30's are known for doing.
I've had my pair of Retro30's for a few years now and they continue to impress. Currently, I have my 2x12 cab loaded with one Retro30 and one Veteran30. Now that is a widely complex and juicy sounding cab!

And they're in!

Man these speakers are bright! I haven't played them dirty and at volume yet, but whoa, they're bright! And they're also a LOT louder than those re-coned G12-65s!

mine mellowed out quite a bit after a couple of weeks of break in

Re: WGS Veteran 30s are here!

Nice review. Congrats! These are very different from your other speakers, you will have to re-EQ to get 'em where you want them to be, sonically. Don't hold to preconceived notions on the EQ, just turn the dials (esp the presence control if it's getting spiky/peaky) until you like the tone ...

Re: WGS Veteran 30s are here!

Yes, I definitely have to turn down the presence control. Right now it's just a little past 9 o'clock, whereas before, it's past 11.

I hope to put a couple of hours more or so this weekend. I'll try to produce some soundclips.

Re: WGS Veteran 30s are here!

Careful using them live. I used them for a year with my Bogner Shiva and PWE but in the end they lacked character to me and were too even, lacking cut. I installed broken in Hellatone V30s and they have a lot more character and depth, sit in the band mix better and everyone is happier with my tone. With my amps, the V30s are perfect, like the amps were made for those speakers. Everywhere I walked in the room was just glorious tone, thick and dripping, chewy, fat and full....much more 3D than the WGS speakers I used for a year.
I had the Vet30/ET65 for a while but it lacked complexity and depth.

I dont seem to have that issue in my jet city with a single WGS. Cuts just fine

Re: WGS Veteran 30s are here!

I was able to finally crank up a little bit my JCM800 with Veteran 30's and man does she sound GLORIOUS!

I was afraid it would be ice picky with those Vet 30's and I had to experiment with 3 ODs to use with it, but man, does it nail the 80's metal sound! My lead sound is SCREAMING!

I had the preamp gain around 2 o'clock (so I can still have a "clean" sound with by rolling my guitar's vol knob) and then used a Zakk Wylde OD to get into heavy metal territory. I used a Ibby RG2550 with Steve's Special and Air Norton pickups coz I need to use the whammy bar. I bet it would have sounded even better with my LP with Duncan Custom and APH1.

There's nothing like playing a LOUD Marshall!

I wish I can play it again and play it even louder the next time! Rock on! \m/

Re: WGS Veteran 30s are here!

Yes sir! I love my WGS Vet 30's and they are just like you describe them. I would only swap them out of my cab for a pair of Eminence Super V12's (since I liked them so much last time I played thru a cab loadd with them) but The WGS Vet 30's sounds great and are there most likely to stay!

hey I just bought the jet 22 combo, did the wgs sound lots better? warmer or brighter? I heard one vid on you tube it sounded really good next to the stock speaker.

Re: WGS Veteran 30s are here!

I second (third, whatever) that they need some break in. Those are fresh cones, and when I put a Green Beret and a Reaper in my Plexi combo, it sounded outright funky. A few hours at moderate volume, then some more a bit louder, and they break in very nicely. I'm definitely a WGS fan!

Re: WGS Veteran 30s are here!

I don't think I'm ever going to pull those speakers out of that amp. I'm thinking of getting a 2x12 extension cab though, probably with ET-65s :)
