What are peavey transtube amps supposed to sound like?

Re: What are peavey transtube amps supposed to sound like?

I don't think they are a modeler really, just a solid state amp with tube sounding technology, i don't think it's based of something like a AC-30 or plexi or anything.

Re: What are peavey transtube amps supposed to sound like?

Nope, they're not modelers, but they do had those "vintage-modern-hi gain" settings, didn't they? It also had two settings for the clean channel.

If I remember correctly, the Vintage was sort of a Vox/early Marshall attempt which was sort of OK. The modern was something like a 5150, more compressed and heavy and that was the best sound it had, and the High Gain model was a Recto attempt which honestly I didn't like at all.

So there you go. Try it for yourself man.

Re: What are peavey transtube amps supposed to sound like?

When the Transtube technology first came out, I saw a Peavey demonstration where the guitarist(s) could switch between a Classic 30 and a Transtube Bandit, and neither the audience or the guitarist could consistently identify which amp was in use. It was very impressive.

That said, all of my amps are tube amps by Mesa Boogie.

Maybe the audience couldn't tell, but I bet the player could.

The black/silver transtube amps were very good, the ones with the red cosmetics were noticeably worse.

That's exactly what I would have thought too. But with a room full of guitarists, and several getting up to play, they just couldn't consistently ID which amp was which. It was a very impressive demo.

And I'd have to agree with Benjy--the original black and silver TT amps do sound better than the later ones with the red graphics.

Re: What are peavey transtube amps supposed to sound like?

I had a trans-tube for quite a while, and it was an exceptionally flexible amp. bright/regular on the clean channel. Not stellar but overall a good solid state clean. The lead channel had a regular/high gain setting and they covered quite a range of sound. There was also a 20db mid scoop for the eq.

The thing to me about those amps was:
a) The high gain was humungous and the bottom tight
b) The mid scoop really made it kill!
c) The most important thing - it really did the "verge" of breakup, light overdrive tones very convincingly

Like I said - it was a really flexible, extremely reliable, good sounding, cheap amp. There was nothing not to like.

Re: What are peavey transtube amps supposed to sound like?

i see Trans Tube Peaveys in pawn shops a fair bit... oneday i should try one out

is this black/silver?

Re: What are peavey transtube amps supposed to sound like?

the transtube bandit is a piece of ****. well... I just like cursing. The cleans are pretty nice, but the gain is a sloppy mess with terrible cleanup. Given the "transtube" title, it really sounds nowhere near a tube amp. The reverb is the best part of the amp IMHO.

thats funny, the reverb on mine tends to woble if its set past like.. 3.

Re: What are peavey transtube amps supposed to sound like?

If I had to play a solid state amp, it would be Peavey Transtube. I have a had a number of the combos, not stellar, but pretty good, very reliable, and dirt cheap.

Re: What are peavey transtube amps supposed to sound like?

Mine is 80 watts and has a sheffield speaker. And it kills my valeve king on a regular basis... should have bought a used 100 watt transtube supreme head, and saved 100.00!!!!! crap!

Yours is a red cosmetic amp. It's not bad, the cleans are nice and bouncy, but the drive channel got noticeably buzzier. I don't know if they changed the voicing, or if Peavey upped the gain, but I liked the old version's gain channel better for crunch.

They all took pedals very well, BTW.

Re: What are peavey transtube amps supposed to sound like?

I've read that pdf from Peavey, and the theory is reasonable enough that I got a Studio Pro chassis in a trade and built a new cabinet for it from solid wood, sealed back with a G12M-70 in it. It sounds better than a lot of Peavey's I've played--still not toe to toe with a good Marshall, but for what I've got in it, it does pretty well.

That may be the reality of it. It's not a tube amp however, it gets closer than anything else for the coin you will spend.

And certainly better than Hartley spec'd it out. Heh, heh.
