Keep in mind that many budget line guitars that are spec'd as mahogany aren't real mahogany like you'd find on a Gibson Les Paul, V or Explorer. They may be made of wood that is in the mahogany family, but not the same Aftrica mahogany. Many are Luan (Asian mahogany) and this includes Epiphones. You have to get to the mid to higher end before it changes to be real mahogany.

I think like 'grouper' here in Florida refers a lot to whatever fish they have in the freezer, the word 'mahogany' is tossed around a lot by guitar makers. 'Ebony and rosewood' have the same problem. Sometimes the wood is on a distant family tree, but sometimes it is outright lies, and they come up with something like 'dragon mahogany' to describe it.

Kramer Baretta Special is a mahogany bodied guitar and at $189.

Re: What are some budget guitars with Mahogany bodies?

That Baretta Special is made in Asia, not real Mahogany. Don't be fooled. It's a piece of crap!

1980s Gibson "The Paul" WAS the classic budget mahogany guitar

But after Gibson reissued, the originals skyrocketed

Funny to see this : I changed the strings on mine two days ago (low tuning not even slinky).
I like the look of it (got it in 95). Sustain is impressive but it does not sound as good as a classic SG.

Now I am wondering : Do I sell it to buy a PRS SE sVn ????

Re: What are some budget guitars with Mahogany bodies?

As long as its not made of Ash,Alder, poplar or maple. I dont mind bass wood, basswood is about in the middle but ill tell ya looking back at my 30 some years of playing guitar ive noticed a growl to Mahogany that i seem to really like. Its weird i use to think it was just he Gibson pickups that vintage cover i put Gibson pickups in other guitars and that wasnt it. Then i thought maybe it was the set neck.

One day i stumbled on a cheap GIO Ibanez that had a mahogany body and i just got it because it was a natural grain wood finish. Plugged it in and woah that sound is right there in this thing sure it wasnt as deep and bassy as my Traditional LP but i could hear that something in it.

So i preceded to sell some 20 guitars i had with random poplar, ash and alder bodies and collect nothing but Mahogany body guitars, i have 2 Fenders with mahogany, a couple of Ibanez, a Steinberger, Epiphone about 4 Gibsons all with Mahogany bodies

It really doesnt seem to matter if its a heavy mahogany like the Traditional, or the EPI custom i have or the lighter Mahogany like i have on the cheaper Ibanez the dark tone with the growl is still in there which the ash and poplar doesnt seem to have.

Ive seen some other random guitars in Mahogany here and there it just seems like thats a rare wood to use for guitars sept Gibson seems to exclusively use Mahogany and i really love the tone of a Gibson. There are however things i dont like about the Gibson though

Now that you mention it, you’re right. Asian mahogany.
That said, the demos I’ve heard sound great. And still, at $179 I don’t think you can lose.

I suppose the "philipino mahogany" or Toona is the same wood that they use in India for Sitar necks and tabla (the right drum, the left one being made of metal). I remember they call it "TUN".

Not a bad wood, but just not the same tree as the Honduras Mahogany !
