What are your favorite neck profiles?

It really doesn't matter much to me. However as I get older I tend to like thick necks. The tone and sustain I fell is better.

At the moment the oval neck of my az224f. Then the wolfgang's. My 2004 les paul standard and the 2003 Les Paul classic are both advertised to have a 60 slim taper neck but they are different. I means I feel them different with a strong preference of the 2004. Another comfy neck is c shaped one of early 90 les paul. I can not play the ibanez wizard and the u shaped schecter

I once played a Stratocaster with a V neck that is my favorite. Unfortunately I don't recall what kind of Strat it was.

As far as I can tell today I am happy with just a perfect section of a circle.

Yes, v shaped necks for me, to. I like the Fender CS 10/56 and the Taylor acoustic V neck. I am okay with the Warmoth Standard Thin and a Gibson Les Paul R9 neck.

For me, it would have to be:
  • ESP Thin U - Very much home for me. I've had tons of LTD's, and they're always some of the comfiest guitars that fit my hand like a glove. Kinda like a Gibson 60's, just a bit narrower and perhaps a tiny bit thinner. Still not blade thin, but a very comfy and fast-feeling neck. Like the fretboard radius as well, and I love that they normally come with bigger frets.

  • I have an LTD ST213 with a Thin U neck that I really like but find it strange as it's not thin. My 2006 Fender Strat C shape is thinner. My Peavey Vandenberg has a very thin neck, thinner than that and you're left with only the fingerboard :)

My best neck is a 2005 Godin Exit 22, I think it has a D profile with 12" radius maple fingerboard.

in general i like a fat c shape neck without too much shoulder and 1 11/16th nut width. a warmoth boatneck suits me well. i can play almost anything, but tend not to like skinny shreddy necks too much

I'd love to try a Wolfgang neck. I've always wanted to spend some time with one of those EVH guitars. I always see them at the store, but never tried them. They have a cool light blue one with cream pickups that I really like the looks of. I just don't like the Floyd.

The Specials come in hard tail
I'd like one of those!

But to be honest, another thing I don't like about those is the routes are pretty taylor-made for those EVH pickups, and it's kinda hard to fit anything else in there. I'm pretty sure the EVH pickups are cool and whatnot, but even if I liked them, knowing me, I'd probably want to swap them out at some point, haha.

Yeah, if you want to swap the pickups you need to swap the baseplates or grind off the corners and the corners of the feet.

Yeah, I've noticed the Thin U varies sometimes. My old EC-1000 and EC-401 were made in the same factory a few years apart the necks felt different. I don't have them either right now to compare to my current EC-400VF, but I like the neck profile on the VF.

But in general, I like the Thin U. They vary, but they're kind of along the lines.

Ibby Wizard necks. I love them all ..every variation I've tried has been excellent for the Shredz.

The neck on my Charvel Traditional Pro ..fast af.

My BC Rich Ironbird pro's neck is pretty slick too....thicker than the Ibby & Charvel neck's & kinda D shaped/narrower ..plus the short scale /24 fret thing & neck dive take a bit of getting used to :laugh2: but eh, it just works for speedy shred ,,so why complain? :bigthumb:

I used to not like the Wizard II. I kinda felt like it was really D-shaped with lots of shoulders and a flat back, but not all that thin, so it kinda felt like playing a plank of wood. But maybe I felt that way because I was playing the Wizard Prestige and Super Wizard at that time.

But I don't know if they changed anything for the Wizard III, but a friend who got one of those natural to blue horizontal fades that were in fashion a couple of years ago with the tortilla-looking wood tops, and I thought the neck was really fast and comfy. That was a great guitar, honestly. Go figure.

I like most Gibson necks I've played. I really love the neck on the 7 string LP classic. It just immediately felt exactly right from the first time I picked it up. I also like the profiles on my 5 and 6 string Ibanez SR basses. In general I like wider C shapes, nothing thin or narrow. Not a fan of the Schecter SLS Elite series necks.

Ibanez Super wizard and Jackson Soloist / Dinky feel the most comfortable, also Charvel and ESP/LTD are very playable. Can't play anything thick for more than 10-15 minutes without starting to feel pain from wrist all the way to shoulder and neck.

I think my S09 LTD-1 Sabre is the only axe I have w/ a Wizard II & it plays as well/fast as any of my other S's. Yeah it is probably a hair thicker but I hardly notice it to be honest ..it still feels super familiar to me and shreds like a mutha :D

On second thoughts my SA's may have Wizard II's as well...still play like butter :D

I had an S470 that had one of those Wizard II necks that I don't like.

I guess it varies from factory to factory too. I guess like 50% of my predisposition with Cort guitars comes from that guitar. It was Cort-made. It wasn't bad, but at that time, I was comparing it to my Prestige RGA121 and my Japanese RG570, and it just wasn't up-to-par. I felt that my World-made SZ570 was way better too.

Profiles are complex, because nut width, heel width, and fret size tend to play into the "feel" of any given profile.

Generally, I've found I really like a slim "D" or modern "C" shape with a 43mm (1-11/16") nut and medium-jumbo to jumbo (i.e. 6100) frets:
  • Jackson Rhoads - 1st: 21mm, 12th: 23mm
  • PRS Pattern Thin/Wide Thin - 1st: 20.5mm, 12th: 22.5mm
  • Schecter A-6 (Avenger) - 1st: 20mm, 12th: 22mm
  • Ibanez Wizard II and III - 1st: 19mm, 12th: 21mm
I also really enjoyed my 1990 Epi LP, which I believe had a '60s slim taper profile, and most of the vintage B.C. Rich Gunslinger models I've tried, which were slender, but not pencil thin by any means.
