What do you guys think I should do....

I've been playing for 10 1/2 months and I want to start shreddin. For the past 4 months I've been playing Heavy Metal such as alot of Metallica, Rhodes' stuff, and Black Sabbath. 4 months ago I couldn't even play a simple solo. I learned alot by myself, and I learned and fixed the rest with my teacher. Now I use the pinky, I can alternate pick, I rest my palm on the bridge, I tap correctly (however I'm having a hard time string skipping and tapping at the same time). So speed shouldn't be that much of a problem...I mean I could work the speed up, however I never tried that much of DT/Becker/Vai/Yngwie/Symphony X/Satriani. Only about one song for each. As my first "shred" song, I learned all of Eruption, I don't have it down perfect but it sounds pretty damn good for a 10 monther believe me. So what do you think should be my next song for learning shred...
Jason Becker: Altitudes
Steve Vai: For the Love of God/Eugenes Trick Bag (FTLOG seems a little too fast for me yet)
Satriani/Petrucci: Flght of the Bumblebee
or Symphony X: Sea of Lies, mostly the tapping interlude and the 2 solos....

Which do you think should be a great (almost) start on shreddin? And wich do you think would be the easiest? Or recommend me a song of one of these bands: Dream Theater/Jason Becker/Steve Vai/Yngwie Malmsteem/Symphony X/Joe Satriani. BTW out of these bands I learned, Satriani-Surfing with the Alien, and the first parts of Altitudes until the fast arpeggios....(I've never worked with arpeggios yet so what should I start on?) So please answer my questions and do you guys have any ways to practice shreddin except for learning the songs (Even though I'm going to learn a couple of the songs listd above). Thanks you guys and I'm sorry for the long post lol. Oh and DiminishedD7th-I've really been inspired by you and your playing, even though youve been playing more than twice than me. THnkas dude.

Re: What do you guys think I should do....

i say learn the altitudes arpeggios. it's a pretty good exercise as well, of course start slow and gain teh speed.

Re: What do you guys think I should do....

Eugenes trick bag is actually panganini's 5th caprice..

Re: What do you guys think I should do....

U'm actually no, there is a part where Vai played Paganinis 5th Caprice, but not the whole song...Anyways, I just learned Yngwie Malmsteem's Black Star at about 90% of the speed, it was really fun to play, I don't know, now I'm starting to like Yngwies work more and more...And also I learned all of Satrianis Surfing with the Alien until the tapping since I don't have 22 frets, and then some, and also likie a minute and a half/two minutes of Summer Song by Satch...I would learn Eugenes Trick Bag but I can't find the song to download, there are no PowerTabs so I can't even listen to it that way, so I never actually heard the song, unless you guys can find me the PowerTab please...I learned Erupton so thats off my list...so as of now my list is....

MAB: Speed Kills/Lives whatever the name of that song is, I saw the vid and its awesome.
Jason Becker: Altitudes
Steve Vai: Speed Metal Symphony (Al ittle too extreme), For the Love of God, Eugenes Trick Bag
Nicolo Paganinis 5th Caprice
Satriani/Petrucci: Flight of the Bumblebee
Satriani: The rest of Summer Song/Surfing with the Alien
Yngwie Malmsteem: Rising Force solo, Arpeggios from Hell, Other Side

So which one out of these would you recommend? (Keep in mind that I have only ben playing for 10 1/2 months...so don't pick the most extreme song....)

Re: What do you guys think I should do....

try malmsteens baroque and roll

i say, start off slow and play without any mistakes then gradually increase the speed.

if you start with the speed bit too soon, you'll just get sloppy at it, trying to mimick the speed and only play every 2nd note, in the long run it'll still sound a bit like it, but not the real thing.. i did that and now i cant play worth ****

Re: What do you guys think I should do....

Or get some transcripted stuff from some classical composers, I have cousin who did that, he is wicked that way and he learned alot about music in the same way.

Re: What do you guys think I should do....

If you havent heard eugenes trick bag how can you tell its not pangini's 5th caprice?
that doesnt make sense.. Also it is all of 5th caprice only he took alot of parts out and plays it in a higher key..

Re: What do you guys think I should do....

Oh then w.e, and just to tell you, I dloaded the PT, so I did hear it...so ya. I found the Speed Kills and Speed Lives tab, Lives is harde then Kills. Now what should I do?

Re: What do you guys think I should do....

Anyone? WHat song should I learn now heres my list:
Symphony X: Sea of Lies (The tapping is mostly the problem)
MAB: Speed Kills/Lives, I can play Speed Kills at 120bpm, and Speed Lives is basically No Boundries)
Jason Becker: Altitudes (I can do the apeggios at about 50/60 bpm)
Steve Vai: Speed Metal Symphony (A little too extreme), For the Love of God, Eugenes Trick Bag (Almost the same as Paganinis 5th caprice except in a higher place)
Nicolo Paganinis 5th Caprice
Satriani/Petrucci: Flight of the Bumblebee
Satriani: The rest of Summer Song/Surfing with the Alien (Compared to the rest these are easy as pie, and not even compared to these songs, they're not too hard)
Yngwie Malmsteem: Rising Force solo, Arpeggios from Hell, Other Side, BlackStar (I finished all of Blackstar at almost full speed)

Re: What do you guys think I should do....

The solos in Megadeth's Rust in peace are brilliant.

To really nail each of these solo's and the tune's you listed above note for note and at the correct tempo, should keep you busy for at least a couple of months :).

Not to brag or anything, but the solos in Megadeths RIP sound I don't know, not to easy, but sound like nothing compared to the solos that I mentioned above. Oh ya, and today I came back from my first guitar lessong in about a month, and I brought a cd that had al th songs except for Speed Lives (No Boundries). I learned how to really sweep, sweeps with arpeggios, and 2 songs...Beckers Altitudes (The Sweeps that DiminshedD7th posted), and Symphony X's Sea of Lies (The tapping interlude). My teacher says that the intrlude is not tapping, its played like this:
E-13-12-10 10 12 13
B 10 10
G 10 9 9 10
D 12

I shoed him the way all the tabs are written, and he says it sounds too high, I kind of agree with him, and this way seems easier. What do you guys think about this way? Is it correct? And should I try the sweeps in Altitudes with Distortion or clean? I play the sweeps at about 55 bpmwich is almost half of what Becker plays it at. I'm slowly building up my speed, but when I play it slow at 55, I can play it really cleanly and I can play all of it. I'm going to go and do what I should of done 10 months ago...buy me my first metronome.

So how does it work? I mean every beat=first and last note of lick?

Re: What do you guys think I should do....

Uhhh, SD forums messed it up, he plays it lik this:

E---13-12-10-------------------10-12-13
B------------10--------------10---------
G--------------10-9----9-10------------
D-------------------12------------------

i have a video of romeo playing sea of lies solo, and it is tapped.

Re: What do you guys think I should do....

Ya but it still sounds good....can someone please give me a sort of lesson of yourself playing the tapping interlude to Sea of Lies? or same thing with Beckers Altitudes the sweeps..just sort of a lesson, real slow, at like 55/50 bpm...thanks

Re: What do you guys think I should do....

Answering your beat question, that depends on what way there actually playing it and what tempo, That tab seem to have 6 notes per beat which means you will be playing sextuplets, or triplets basically the same thing, id recommend as starting out anyway play the first 6 notes on the first click and get the 7th not to start on the 2nd click, this is just to get you used to the metronome, then when you can do that eaily try all 12 notes per beat..

Re: What do you guys think I should do....
