What does modern high-gain mean to you? (NAD related)

Re: What does modern high-gain mean to you? (NAD related)

Are you going to tell me this is fake? If you do, you must not know anything about Devin. The whole album was criticized for being too serious a Strapping release as he had newly inspired emotion from the 9/11 attacks.

Wow... I certainly wouldn't use this band as an example of guitar tone. These videos just seem to make the case for gain being subbed for technique. In both videos, the gain has obscured the attacks and releases of the notes.

That, when coupled with the fact that they are riding one pitch for over 30 seconds in each video, tells me all I need to know.

If this is teh Br00talz, then I ain't interested. Pubescent gained-out fury sounds like just that. Lots of noise, not much substance.

I hate to admit it, but I have to support eschoendorff's assessment... the only dude I hear playing is the drummer. Everyone else is just background noise.

Watching those SYL videos, I suddenly understand what people mean by "fake aggression."

Re: What does modern high-gain mean to you? (NAD related)

Devin is super talented but on the whole SYL was really just a stupid band. To his benefit though SYL gave him exposure for his far superior solo career.

Here ya go:

Re: What does modern high-gain mean to you? (NAD related)

To me, modern high-gain is this:

Not a big Machine Head fan, but they know what they're doing.
And a good example of a proper modern Metal tone.
Super tight and crunchy. Even I like that!

Okay, at the risk of stirring the pot, here is modern hi gain, as far as I'm concerned:

Marshall JVM + TS (courtesy of Andy Sneap) with... get this: E Standard tuning!!!

Notice the saturation, the tightness, and the clarity of attacks.

It's just one example. I don't think you can really call End Game the definitive "HERE IS MODERN HI GAIN".
Half the tightness comes from having a robotic rhythm guitar hand like Dave Mustaine anyway :laugh2:

It's one of those songs that is really simple but for some reason I find it catchy. I wouldn't say it's 'fake' aggression though.
Townsend's motivation was the "creative anger" sparked by the September 11, 2001 attacks and further cultivated during their 2001 tour.
. The album itself is raw and roughly produced which would obviously not make it a good example for a modern high gain sound. It has an odd charm to it though. I recommend reading the tabs to some of the stuff from Alien or City. Also that tab is wrong. The notes are the other way round. In fact the tone from Alien or The New Black is probably what is being described.

All the above- that SYL video reminded me of the first time I saw KISS in the 1970s on TV ..."this is a joke right?..the makeup? the music?..these guy aren't serious are they?"

I'm with Diego- not my kinda tone, but its what I'd be shooting for in a modern high gain metal tone.
