What does modern high-gain mean to you? (NAD related)

Re: What does modern high-gain mean to you? (NAD related)

I haven't read the entire thing, but I did borrow it from my Uni library for a research project. The flame thing really sticks in my mind. It makes sense. You don't listen to your amp with your ears right up against the speaker grill. That's why I think a more natural sound is captured at a distance.

I love roomy sounds, although it's not always practical, especially for busy high-gain playing where the instruments are competing with each other. If I ever get around to purchasing a decent condenser mic with an onboard figure-8 pattern I'm gonna experiment with some mid-side configurations.
You'd be surprised. Using the flame technique, the sound still stays pretty tight and cohesive even for metal.

Moving the mic further away from the speaker cone is only really effective in acoustically treated rooms, or just VERY huge rooms.
I'm lucky in that I have a relatively decent sized space to mic up my cab, but I still tend to put the mic pretty much on the grille to avoid the effect comb filtering impacting on the sound as much as possible.

I guess I'm lucky I did the research and dished out. I can get killer drum sounds too.

It's worth it if you're serious about recording. The first thing you need to worry about is not have parallel walls. Even if it means getting a big ugly piece of plywood and kicking the bottom out of it so you get this. \ |

Absolutely. It's a real mind opener and changes the way one would look at engineering/recording/producing.

Nice to finally see something productive from this thread full of angry mobs lol.
I'll definately be checking that book out as I am just venturing into the home recording buisness. I have a relatively large customer base form my network/local scene wanting to record for cheap, but I need more knowledge! So thanks a lot for posting that!!!
How big is this speaker flame exactly? I find that setting up the mic (sm57) in an angle aimed off center of the cone gives the best result so far. but I've also gotten some killer amp sounds recording form far away in a band set-up.

It differs from cab to cab and differs again with different volumes. Sometimes it's not longer than a foot. You have to find the flame first. It's all in the book under the 'chasing the flame' section.

:joke::birthday:

My attempts at humor always get lost in translation somewhere...
It's just I've seen people use the rocket launcher thingo when something genuinely gets on their nerves and it does kind of look like I shot the duck if you look at it the wrong way...

When I first read the post I laughed my ass off... then I got slightly concerned and thought 'hold on wait, he doesn't actually think I shot the duck does he??'
Anyway, cheers.
