You'd be surprised. Using the flame technique, the sound still stays pretty tight and cohesive even for metal.I haven't read the entire thing, but I did borrow it from my Uni library for a research project. The flame thing really sticks in my mind. It makes sense. You don't listen to your amp with your ears right up against the speaker grill. That's why I think a more natural sound is captured at a distance.
I love roomy sounds, although it's not always practical, especially for busy high-gain playing where the instruments are competing with each other. If I ever get around to purchasing a decent condenser mic with an onboard figure-8 pattern I'm gonna experiment with some mid-side configurations.
