what does nut material affect?

If given the option between a bone nut and a graphite nut, how do i weigh my options? I hear brass is another option... does the material just affect sustain and brightness? how does each material perform differently

Re: what does nut material affect?

the nut material effects two things, tone of open strings and tuning stability.

i like bone nuts but i dont do much trem work

Re: what does nut material affect?

Graphite is better if you use a trem. a lot of people take a number 2 pencil and 'color in' their non-graphite nuts so that it still 'feels' like graphite, if that makes any sense.

yep thats a great way. Big Bends and sanding your nut also does wonders. As for tone, brass is brightest.

Re: what does nut material affect?

UI use graphite powder (the kind locksmiths use) on my nut slots to prevent sticking. Works great. I used to have all kinds of tuning problems with those unexpected "pings" when the strings slipped. Like most guys, I blamed the tuners & bought some replacements, but once I started lubing the nuts, I haven't had to replace tuners again. Much cheaper this way.

By using graphite powder, I pretty much get the benefits of having a graphite nut. You can't solve a problem much easier & cheaper than that.

Re: what does nut material affect?

What are some advantages of a bone nut? I'm a really big fan of graphite nuttz because of the tuning stability.
