Re: What is your favorite Bridge humbucker pickup?

Custom 8. I have yet to beat that one. And got_tone? (where is he by the way?) is to blame for that, because he loaned one to me that was hand-wound by MJ, and it had Austin Powers' mojo.

Good man! Im sure I answered Custom 8 already in this ancient thread, but if not, here is my reply:

Custom8 cuz its so great!! lol

Screamin' Demon, so far.

Perfect, perfect, perfect.

My favorites - EMG for actives. For passives, my new favorite is the Duncan Custom. Just put one in my Charvel, and now I'm looking for ANOTHER one for my other Charvel. Already have one in my Explorer. My favorite used to be the JB, but now it's tied for
2nd with the Duncan Distortion. Favorite neck pickup is the Jazz Neck, with the 59neck in 2nd place.

Howdy,

Guitar: ES-335 (w/ Maple neck)
Bridge: DiMarzio 36th Anni PAF.
Amp: Mostly Dr. Z Carmen Ghia
The 36th PAF is satisfactory, as it is a bit too middy and needs just a bit more treble. Still, it beats the '59 bridge-no offense to Duncan.

In a semihollow the PG would be better - 59 is too scooped. It forte is probably a thick dense LP type guitar.

I added an A2 mag to my '59 to give it the growl I wanted

Howdy,

Something tells me that Seth Lovers would be a very good tonal fit in my ES-335.

Your derned tootin' they would!

I have a set in my Epi Dot. Best pickups for a 335 style guitar IMO.

Re: What is your favorite Bridge humbucker pickup?

Well, I'm a Les Paul-335 user, and I like most of mine--for different uses. Even the oft-maligned Gibson 498T can sound good for rock/metal in a Les Paul through a Marshall, but that's not my style. Through the right amp, the 500T is a rocking pickup. I like the tonality, but it had too much output for my Mesa amps. I've got a JB TB-4 in the bridge of my ASAT Deluxe, wired to a 250K pot with coil-splitter. What's not to like? It can sound rich, yet aggressive at the same time. Sure the single-coil mode is a little anemic, but I set my rig up for the single coil tone, and hit the switch for a nicely boosted, thick solo tone that still cuts, yet isn't shrill. Pure rock.

More in my style are the Middle-Of-The-Road pickups: Antiquity, Seth Lover, '57 Classic, '57 Plus, Ibanez Super '58, IBZ Infinity 2, and the Gibson Burstbucker 2.

Antiquitys...well what can I say that's not been said before. Totally creamy, totally orgasmic. My production Seths seem to have a little more clarity and brightness--not bad, just different. The Musician's Friend/Custom Shop 50th Anniversary A2 Seth fall in between the production Seths and the Antiquity; slightly over-wound, a fabulous all-around pickup. I should have bought ten sets of these.

I love my Ibanez AS-120 (Super '58) and my GR-520 Ghostriders (Infinity 1 and 2); the pickups are a good reason why. The Infinitys are definitely built for rock; the Super '58s have everything you love about a classic humbucker. I would not DREAM of replacing either of these Ibanez pickups.

My LP Elegant and my ES-335 have the covered '57 Classic set. You love them or hate them. The mids are rich, often too muddy for some and just perfectly creamy for others. I see them in the same ballpark and the Seths and the Antiquitys--just a slightly different flavor. In the 335, through the Mesa, BAM!--instant Larry Carlton! My LP Classic Antiques have uncovered '57s--with a '57 Plus in the bridge. The '57 Plus is a rocking pickup along the lines of the JB with an aggressive midrange, yet a little less output. I always look forward to playing these guitars--I know I'm going to be spending a lot of time on that bridge pickup with a big smile on my face.

But, I have lately been enjoying my LP Historics more and more, and the Burstbucker 1 & 2 are really doing the job. Keep in mind, while I have several Les Pauls, my Number One is a G&L Legacy. I use Mesa Mark Series amps (no rectos) and my current band is a pretty M-O-R do-it-all classic cover band. These pickups can do it all, and not miss a beat. I use my tone controls a lot--but it's all in there. Not many pickups can give you the grind that you need for a great crunch rhythm tone; get dark enough for a singing Santana tone, AND still put out enough twang for an Eagles or Charlie Daniels tune. I would say the production Seths are the closest I've tried to the BBs, but the BB's have a little more edge--tameable with the tone controls.

Overall, I might give a slight edge to the BB 2 to still deliver some spankin' twang--something the others don't really do. The Anniversary Seths, the Antiquitys, the '57 Classics, the Super '58s are all good all-around PAF pickups--each just a slightly different flavor--and all scrumptious.

My musical styles, situations and rigs have changed several times over the years, and I'm sure many of these pickups would not have worked as well for me in the past as they do now. It's such an individual thing, you just have to find what works for you.

Duncan Custom: Works, so far, every genre through any amp.

Close 2nd: B&B L500XL: Turn your gain up to infinity, still retains clarity
