What is your perfect neck?

I really like a thinner slightly assymetrical soft v profile. I prefer medium jumbo stainless steel frets and rolled fretboard edges. The neck should be raw maple with a rosewood fretboard. Headstock should has six tuners inline and a single string tree over the e and B strings. Inkays depend upon the body to which the neck is attached.

What do ya'll like?

Re: What is your perfect neck?

I also like raw maple but don’t care much about the headstock.

C to D profile, compound radius (10-14ish), maple fretboard. Likely medium jumbo as well. Just not tall vintage.

Re: What is your perfect neck?

i have thick ones and thin sabre style and honestly i can get in a happy spot with any of them.

Re: What is your perfect neck?

If I'm making for myself, a bit over 1" at the first is what I aim for with a deep U

. I'm surprised Assymetrical soft Vs and Assymetrical Ds aren't more popular -they are my favorite by far.

I'm with you on Medium Jumbo Stainless and rolled edges and/or binding.

I prefer Ebony fretboard with maple neck

I like 3 and 3 even then though it's inferior from most perspectives -except looks.

Could give 2 ****s about inlays -I dont really look at fretboard inlays when I play -I look at the edge ...but for hanging on the wall? something blocky!

Re: What is your perfect neck?

Jackson compound radius followed by Ibanez Wizard III. Also whatever is on the Schecter Blackjack.

Re: What is your perfect neck?

I like a mahogany neck with either an ebony or rosewood fretboard. Perfect shape and size would be about .83 at the first to around .94-.95 at the 12th. Soft small shoulders with a soft V profile. I've never owned an asymmetrical neck, but if it were a soft V shape I believe I'd like it.

Oh, and I really like the feel of jumbo frets.

Anything not V or deep C shaped and not sticky (Classic Vibe necks are my kryptonite on that) and with tall frets will do.

I usually like Jackson necks, despite not really being into Jackson guitars. I also loved the neck on a Schecter Blackjack ATX Solo 2 I think it was, sort of a brutal Les Paul with Blackouts and a ebony fretboard that was crazy good to play.

Anything with tiny frets drives me mad.

Re: What is your perfect neck?

My 2000 American Standard Strat with RW fingerboard is the perfect neck for my hands. I have no idea what the specs are, or what size or material the frets are. Plays like buttah. Wish I could laser scan it and make a few more necks that size and shape.

I actually like 4×2 slightly better than 6-inline, but the headstock is almost always too small to match the aesthetic of the rest of the guitar.

Re: What is your perfect neck?

Jackson Soloist. For those who aren’t familiar, it’s not as thin as you might think. It’s more like a 60’s-type Gibson neck. It’s compound radius, kind of narrow, and has no heel.

For sure- I really sort of wish my Soloist was thinner, but the heel-less aspect wins me back.

Re: What is your perfect neck?

As long as it's not V shaped or narrow, I'm usually good. Gibson 60's profile is a good happy medium for me.

Re: What is your perfect neck?

Generally speaking I like a medium-thick soft V (.87-.90 or so at the nut). Nut width needs to be at least 1.65", and fingerboard radius needs to be at least 9.5", but no flatter than about 12-14". My favorite fret wire size is 6150, but I can play just about anything that's tall enough. I'm not a huge fan of 6100 or 6000, but I'll take bigger over smaller any day.

Of the necks I actually have on hand, my favorites are the ones on my Explorer and SG. They're both a medium C shape; thicker than a slim taper, but thinner than the '59 profile on my LP Standard. Nut width is 1 11/16" and I've been told the radius on the Explorer is a straight 10". I've never measured the SG's radius, but it seems to be in a similar 10-12" range.

Re: What is your perfect neck?

A charvel "c-ish" shape with compound radius. Hand oiled, and medium jumbo frets. That right there is hand heaven. Charvels are known for their necks for a good reason!

Re: What is your perfect neck?

Funny, I never noticed how polarizing V profiles are. Most of you seem to either not be able to live with them or not be able to live without them.

Re: What is your perfect neck?

Deep soft V – mid to high 0.80's inches under the nut, and anywhere up to about 1.0" under the 12th fret.

As much curve as possible. I'd like even more than 7-1/4" if it existed.

Typical Fender nut width is fine, though wider is also fine.

Skinny, tall, heavily crowned frets with perfectly rounded ends, with a heavy "edge roll" and an end bevel that cuts right into the neck itself a bit. Old-style Fender frets are fine, but I don't mind them even skinnier and even taller.

My ideal neck: the V described, with a compound radius that flattens out to 7-1/4" on the high end of the neck from a curvier radius on the low end of the neck. Frets would be like 6320's, but about 50 percent taller, and would be dressed as described above.
