What is your perfect neck?

Re: What is your perfect neck?

Another that likes (for the most part) the 22 fret neck pickup posi.

Although you do get a little more 'cluck' out of an SG middle posi than is usual for a Gibby....so there is a compensation for owning a guitar or two like that.

Re: What is your perfect neck?

My fave are Strat and Tele necks.
But for some accrobatic stuff transcribed from the violin I really prefer the SG neck (The violin scale is less than 13" !)
For slide I also prefer the Gibson's shorter scale.

Recently I got a guitar with a neck that plays like butter. It is a PE R-60, a japanese guitar inspired by the Les Paul but with a modified design that provides an excellent access the upper register.

Another neck I love is the large neck of the Fender Electric XII (one piece of maple with rosewood fingerboard) but now I don't play it every week.

21 frets is sometimes troublesome. Sometimes I need 24 frets.
Why only 21 frets on the Gilmour Signature Strat ?

I like the flat radius of a Charvel neck (16" ?) but not the tone of a basswood body.

IMO any neck profile is fine but you have to be used the neck scale (for precise bending and glissando)

Re: What is your perfect neck?

There are a video on YouTube in which they compare the PRS Custom 22 and Custom 24 and you can clearly hear the difference in tone linked to the neck pup position (more full for the Custom 22 when using both pickups together).

That said for some reason I would rather take the C 24.

Re: What is your perfect neck?

My main issue with a 24 fret guitar is purely the visual aspect of trying to reference “where you are” while playing.
For example, if you need to get up to 17th position say, for a pentatonic scale the extra frets make it “look like” I need to go higher than I really do. It’s like an optical illusion.

Re: What is your perfect neck?

I prefer 24 frets just because I like the "symmetry" of having the second octave on the neck. The change in tone you get from a 24 fret neck doesn't really bother me all that much either, most of my go-to neck pickups have a bridge model that can be put in the neck to decently emulate the sound of a 22 fret neck humbucker.

Re: What is your perfect neck?

A 59b in the neck of a 24 fretter sounds similar to a 59n in the neck of a 22 fretter. They don't sound exactly the same, but the 59b has a superior sound IMO than a 59n in a 24 fret guitar.

Re: What is your perfect neck?

Okay... I get what you’re saying now. Your wording threw me a little bit.

Still, the voicing of a pickup doesn’t really make up for the naturally “rounder” tone that comes from having the neck pickup a greater distance from the bridge. Reminder: I’m not saying it’s bad... just different.

Re: What is your perfect neck?

I like my LP Std's '59 Rounded profile, and quite like the modern/current Advanced Response ones on a few of Gibson's acoustics of late.

As for the neck spot; The only one I've had real difficulty with, was the 20 fret double-neck ones. I sometimes find a boomy pickup in a 22 fretter to be much better in a 24, but I wouldn't deliberately pick a 24 over a 22.

Re: What is your perfect neck?

Yeah, I prefer a 22 fret neck for the same reasons listed above. I just like the feel of the Wizard III. Now, if I could get a 22 fret Wizard III on an HSS hardtail strat ... It would be over for me.

Re: What is your perfect neck?

I played a used import lower end BC Rich Mockingbird the other day just goofing around at a store, I think thats like a 300-400.00 dollar guitar NEW -and I guess it's their lowest end offering and nothing I would ever have a reason to own. But I must say the neck, fretboard, and fret finish were really impressive for that price point -REALLY IMPRESSIVE -The Neck was really shallow and super speedy.

This was embarrassing to type. haha.

Hey, we like what we like. I got used to small necks playing my '82 Strat, which has probably the smallest neck of any guitar I've played. If it wasn't for the slightly sticky finish on it, it would be my favorite neck. But it is still #2.

Something about the setup on all new BC Rich guitars I've played is *very* impressive. I wanted one of their cheaper line through-neck Mockingbirds, then they apparently discontinued them.

Good to know. I was wondering how are the necks of these (I never touched a BC Rich).
Being mahogany guitars, how they do compare to Gibsons ? (I am asking for Mockingbirds.)

This one looks nice IMO:

Is it MIK ?

Re: What is your perfect neck?

Wizard Prestige is about perfect for me, but so is anything else in that same area.

Wide and flat boards; (43mm at nut and wide up high, with at least 14" radius)

Medium-thin depth; (18mm-19mm)

Thinner C with flattened or almost flattened backs are my favorite carve. Shoulders bug me unless it's a super-thin neck.

For woods I really don't care, but I do really like the rosewood/maple and ebony/hog pairings.

Allparts "Fat" necks. I use them on all my Tele and Strat builds. 1" of fat wood combined with a 9-1/2 radius and medium frets. Yum!

Re: What is your perfect neck?

The Warmoth Boatneck. 1.00" thick profile the entire length of the neck, soft V similar to a vintage '52 Tele. 6105 Frets, 1 11/16" nut width, compound radius. I have this same neck on 2 of my guitars. This one is my all-time favorite.

There are others that I'm comfortable with but this one is it for me.

Gibson 60s slim taper, or I really like the Fender American Deluxe/Elite neck with the compound radius. I generally prefer a satin finish, maple or ebony fretboard, and 6230 or 6130 frets with binding or rolled edges.
