What is your perfect neck?

Re: What is your perfect neck?

Prefer thin D shape (Ibanez-like) maple necks with rosewood fretboards and a natural finish, but it really depends on what I'm playing. Sometimes I really like the chunkier C shape strat neck and the brightness of the maple fretboard.

Re: What is your perfect neck?

I tend to like fairly thin, 1-11/16" nut width necks the best, typically with a mildly flattened back, as opposed to a "V" or strong "C" shape.

That said, I have always found the original Wizard profile by Ibanez (17mm at 1st, 19-20mm at 12th) a little too thin and flat, but liked the later Wizard II (19mm at 1st, 21mm at 12th) a lot.

In 1-5/8" nut width, I had a 1990 Epiphone Les Paul (short-run "narrow open-book" headstock) with what I believe was a '60s profile that was the nicest I've played on an LP style guitar.

PRS' "Pattern Thin" profile (20.5mm at 1st fret, not sure about 12th) is also really comfortable to me.

Here are some measurements I've taken from other necks I've really liked the feel of (1st fret, 12th fret):

  • Jackson Kevin Bond Rhoads - 20mm, 23mm
  • 1989 ESP M-II Neck-Thru - 20mm, 21.5mm
  • Washburn HM Series Idol - 20mm, 21mm
  • 1988 BC Rich Gunslinger - 19.5mm, 22mm
  • Warmoth "Standard Thin" - 20mm, 21.5mm (very similar to older USA Charvel necks)

Somewhere I have specs for the early Yamaha Pacifica 921/1221 necks, which were crazy thin, but also felt great! Warmoth produced the necks for the early 9XX and higher series and they featured a dramatic 9.5-16" compound radius. Really unique!

I have freakishly large paws so 14” 1st to 22nd fret, 59 fender boatneck profile, jescar evo gold frets with 6105 dimensions, gloss poly so it looks decent with out the stick of nitro, rolled edge rosewood fingerboard, unbleached bone nut, 6 on a side tuners, strat headstock. It works great for me and i’ve tried just about everything twice.

Re: What is your perfect neck?

I probably replied to this before, but I really love my '87 Standard Strat's neck. If my '62 LP's neck didn't have that gross glossy finish, I'd love it more.

Gibson 1960 LP TV Special DC neck is my favorite for something you could buy in the store.

My 1979 Pedulla MVP Custom Guitar is my Favorite neck I've ever played -but it's hand shaped so it's not necessarily repeatable.

BUT ..... I've recently tried Asymmetrical necks -and I am completely %100 confident that given enough exploration of the available Asymmetrical necks on the market -that my favorite neck I could ever know is still out there

Re: What is your perfect neck?

Above anything I have ever played the 1993-mid 1994 Carvin necks. 16 radius jumbo frets slim wide a fast D profile 24 fret necks. Pre the graphite rods super stable and super fast.
Next in line would be the neck with the new thin profile option on my 2017 Kiesel. SS Jumbos 14 radius ebony and again a slim fast D profile and # 3 is the older PRS Custom 24 Wide thin neck. Note all are 25 scale.
