What is your preferred tone wood? (or material ex..Graphite)

Re: What is your preferred tone wood? (or material ex..Graphite)

I'm on a basswood kick right now, but I'm open to other possibilities.

I really have been digging ash! I have been trying to put together in my head my ideal combination of woods... If I could find a carved top body (like an ESP Horizon) made of ash and a rosewood neck and pao ferro fretboard I would be set. I have also wondered how a mahogany body, walnut neck combo would be...

I've been really interested in rosewood necks for a while now after having played a few Music Man axes with them. I've heard they go well with mahogany or korina bodies. I'll find out sooner or later.

I like alder, because it it tonally neutral and I can use pickups to get whatever sound I want. I also like carbon fiber for the same reason- I also love that electrics I have played using carbon fiber are light.

I have three electrics all with different body woods: swamp ash, alder and poplar, and they all sound good to me. The ash is a Thinline, with a hollow chamber under the f-hole, so that plays a part in it - but I think I hear a sort of bright, scooped tone from it. The other woods seem pretty neutral. Two of the guitars have goncalo alves necks - one with a g.c. fingerboard, and the other with a wenge fingerboard. Goncalo alves is a warm toned wood, and I love it on these guitars (balances the brightness on the Thinline).

My favourite solid body guitar is made with Alder, and I really love the acoustic sound of that guitar, it's bright and balanced and LOUD. Like all strats, it comes with a maple neck and mine has a rosewood fretboard (I've never been able to get along with maple necks, sadly because I like the look of them).

My favourite hollowbody is made with Cherry, I've never really seen this tone wood in anything else, but it makes for a very warm and resonant instrument.

In spite of that, most really good guitars I play seem to be made with Mahogany, I really do think that it's the most 'standard' and decent tonewood available.

I'm on a serious Alder Strat kick, such a familiar tone acoustically, then add on the vintage pickups and its great.

Otherwise mahogany is another classic tone.

For acoustics I'm addicted to the deep bass and crisp trebles of rosewood! Such an enjoyable tone for solo playing.

How does it sound in desks and side tables?

My favourite solid body guitar is alder with a once piece maple neck.

When I visit relatives in West Virginia I make sure to pick up some local Black Walnut. It's like you took Mahogany and made it even better. I mean, just everything across the board. It's probably the most balanced wood out there. Just for clarity's sake, I want to specify that I am talking about Appalachian Black Walnut, and not California Claro Walnut. Claro Walnut tends to split way too easy.

Re: What is your preferred tone wood? (or material ex..Graphite)

The best combination for me has to be an alder body with a maple neck with a rosewood fretboard. Alder is such a neutral and resonant tonewood. I like maple necks because they're punchy, but I like the rosewood because it warms it up so there's no high mid peakiness or harsh trebles. It's punchy, it's warm and it's clear, so it's all the things I realistically look for in an electric guitar.

I just finished a semi-hollow project of African Mahogany Body with a Washington Spruce Top...that is my new favorite tone wood combo! For me, it has the perfect amount of sustain and perfect range! Not too bright and not too mellow either. I recommend it to people who want something between a Les Paul and a Strat.
