ooohh I'm in love with my car, I got a feel for my automobile.....
woops this is about fingerboards .... rosewood all the way - feel, look, etc. etc.

By the way, my car is a piece of junk - just thought you might like to know.
Peace

I like rosewood best for electrics.

Sometimes, Ebony for acoustics and basses.

I never really bond with maple necked guitars, so I voted Rosewood. Eventually, when I pick up a Tele, I'll get that one
in maple, since I do want another maple neck. Right now,
none of my guitars have a maple fretboard.

I'll trade ya' my Tele for that Matchless......it has a maple neck!!!:6:

Maple for me, I like the feel and the tone, look also ... as a second choice rosewood ... not a fan of ebony, and never tried pau ferro, I did try a guitar that had a swamp ash finger board one time, real nice, but the grain pattern was nuts (as you can imagine).

i like the look and feel of ebony, but i also like the look and feel of maple, but i also like the look and feel of rosewood, but i also like the look and feel of pau ferro. :D

one of my guitars has a pau ferro, and that guitar sounds imcredible!!! it may be to the fact that it has duncans in it!
another of mine has rosewood, and it also sounds incredible!
and now i have a maple fretboard guitar, i haven't put duncans in it yet, but it still sounds good!
dont have ebony yet though :(

but i have to vote for ebony, cause it's smooth :cool2:

I love the feel of my ebony neck on the vandenberg, but the rosewood necks on my others feel great too. I would really like to have a tele with a maple fretboard, but that probably wont happen for a few years...So my vote goes to ebony

Rosewood definitely. Shame they can't get the good stuff anymore, it'd be nice to have some darker fretboards again.

There's still some good stuff out there. A lot of those companies would die their fretboard darker in the past.

Re: what kind of fretboard do you prefer?

I was born on rosewood baby, I'm not changing...unless the time for a Custom comes along.

Re: what kind of fretboard do you prefer?

gibsonish guitars = rosewood

fenderish guitars = maple

i've never played on an ebony board... :31:

Re: what kind of fretboard do you prefer?

I like maple, particularly the Wolfgang neck but my LPC with the ebony fretboard sure is smooth. Ebony and maple for me. :)

Re: what kind of fretboard do you prefer?

I own all 3 Ebony,Maple and Rosewood and to me you just cant beat a nice worn in Maple Fretboard. Plus to my ears it sounds a little brighter with alittle more snap than rosewood.

Re: what kind of fretboard do you prefer?

Ebony for sure. I play SG's and my ebony fretboard Gothic SG is brighter with better harmonics than my rosewood boarded SG.

Re: what kind of fretboard do you prefer?

Ebony lover here!
My first experience was Maple, nice and bright but needs lots of care! My second was with Rosewood, this kinda left a bad taste with me because the guitar it was put on totally sucked! After that I tried Ebony, the feel was excellent, it balanced out the dark mahogany tone and added crisp and razorsharp attack to my sound. I totally knew what people meant by flying off an ebony fretboard! After that I tried Rosewood again, nicer than before but still no Ebony, too warm on warm guitars! Unfortunately Ebony is more expensive than both, that also goes for the axes manufacturers put them on! :(

Re: what kind of fretboard do you prefer?

I played rosewood & ebony fb's for years and now play maple exclusively. Maple feels better to my fingers and I don't notice anything inadequate about the tone.

Re: what kind of fretboard do you prefer?

I have RG570 with rosewood and Heritage H-147 with ebony...ebony looks better and has the feel...but I voted for maple cause I like the crispness of it...also I think maple is a must for strat and tele guitars...actually there's no wrong choice or bad fingerboards...all you have to do is having a fingerboard that suits your guitar and your sound...you may want a strat that sounds a bit warmer or an all mahogany warm LP to sound a little crisper...I'd prefer my ibanez having an ebony board but it is already a bright guitar so ebony could be somewhat unsuitable...I think having your custom sound is the ultimate goal in guitar playing and spirit...I'd try both maple strat and rosewood strat before buying...I don't want to go without experiencing...I always thought a strat should have maple fingerboard but after trying a rosewood strat it could sound better to my ears who knows

Re: what kind of fretboard do you prefer?

Ebony.

I think ebony adds a certain "piano like" quality to the tone that is unlike anything else.

Especially on acoustic.
