What pick brand, style and size do you use and why?

I used Dunlop Tortex Standard .60 for 11 years... then I asked myself why?? I realized that although I loved the feel and sound of the .60, I never tested any other picks. Right now after going through the whole box of picks at the local store, I'm faithful to the Dunlop Ultex Sharp .73 and I'm glad I found it!

It has a similar slight pick "flexing" feel and sound to the Standard Tortex .60 I used to play with, but the Ultex glides better, last longer and the sharp tip allows me to have more precision at fast picking.

What's your favorite pick?

Yellow Dunlop Tortex (.73). Normal shape. I also like Fender Mediums. They work best for me.

Re: What pick brand, style and size do you use and why?

I had been using the green torex for years. Then about 3ish years ago I tried my hand at finger picking. I haven't used a pick since even for things that normally require a pick. I found it a lot more fun to use no picks.

Re: What pick brand, style and size do you use and why?

I used .73 yellow Tortex for years...hated the way they sounded but they were easy to hold on to and lasted longer than other picks. After a year or so I stopped noticing how bad they sounded to me and just kept on using them then several years back I got stuck and had to use some plain old Fender picks again...they don't last for crap but lord do they sound SO much better, IMHO...

I switched right away to either heavy or extra heavy Fender picks in either 351 or 451 (which is the mini 351) and played that and nothing but for several years until I got a wild hair and tried Jazz III's...love 'em!

After that I went pick crazy for a while trying everything from V Picks to Dava Picks to everything Dunlop has to offer...just dozens of picks but I always come back to Fender 351's and 451's for the most part I do still use Jazz III's now and then...the Jazz III's have less attack and are a little warmer sounding and they last a lot longer but the Fenders just have the perfect attack, I just wish they lasted longer...I'll burn up a dozen or 2 in one gig!

Tortex 1.14 rounded triangles. For me they shred the least whilst i'm riffin' it up. The extra material is more to hold onto which results in more precision for my style, and i can use all three sides.

Re: What pick brand, style and size do you use and why?

Tortex purple, blue, or green. I've used them for as long as I can remember them being around. Before that, I used Fender extra heavy tortoise shell picks. I have started liking the big, triangular Tortex picks as of late.

Re: What pick brand, style and size do you use and why?

Dunlop Big Stubbys, 2mm. Because I'm compensating for something.

Used to use Purple Tortex with no problems and something like a 1mm or .7mm Dunlop Jazz or Martin is around here somewhere for strumming...

Interestng... Never tought about the fact you could use all three sides... triple the lasting I guess!

Lol! I like the Big Stubby when I play a hollowbody Jazz box or sometimes when I feel in a "Strunz and Farrah" mood with my nylon acoustic.

I Like the standard sized Fender heavy celluoid picks, but I also use the red smaller jazz picks for certain things...I use many different brand picks, but I keep the size of the picks the same, except for the jazz picks...Different material equals slight tonal changes and thats why I use different ones..

Dunlop Nylon .60mm for chordy jangly stuff as it kinda glides better and makes the notes blend together rather then sound seperated. For power chords and lead I generally use Tortex .60mm.

Re: What pick brand, style and size do you use and why?

I've played many different types of picks in my life.

I keep coming back to 3 picks:

any good quality "tortoise shell" pick

dunlop tortex

dunlop ultex

the tortoise shell picks are great, I really like them, specially because they aren't "matte" like tortex, though tortex is more readily available and accesible.

I like ULTEX picks alot, they remind me of their tortex but they have a brighter attack.

I started out using .60 tortex, the orange ones. a few of my favorite artists use them. Then I decided to try .73 but at the time (like... 8 years ago) I found them too stiff, I expiremented with every gauge and ended up settling on .60 for a long time.

recently a few players have asked me for picks and I lend them my thinner ones and get weird looks. I decided to try out different picks again and have been using 1.14 tortex, I went through a phase a while back where I used to use them because of J Mascis from Dinosaur JR, now I'm back to those which is great because I have a stash. tortex picks are so great because they really do resemble tortoise without the cruelty factor.

I don't like looking down at them and seeing matte purple though :S

kind of grosses me out.

I like thicker picks now because I have better control over the notes I'm playing, things don't feel "floppy" and palm muting is great. the response is more immediate.

Re: What pick brand, style and size do you use and why?

I like Tortex Jazz, the smaller, pointy one, in 1 mm for thicker sound and 0.8 mm for sharper tone.

Re: What pick brand, style and size do you use and why?

I have been loving the Dunlop .88 Tortex Sharps. Reason being, I started out using crap no name stuff, moved on to too Clayton triangles, and found those to not have enough speed for me. I then moved on to Dunlop hetfield blackfangs (ultex .73 sharps with cheesy decal) and found them too flexible, small and not durable enough for my then recently developed hard picking technique. That's when I decided I needed a larger, more durable pick. It was simply a long process of elimination.

Re: What pick brand, style and size do you use and why?

None of you people use the Gator Grips? I love those things, and I like the sound too. They last forever. I go for the .96 mm personally. Any thinner, and I lose single string control, because they flex too much. Any thicker, and they sound too dull.

Re: What pick brand, style and size do you use and why?

For electric I prefer 1.14mm Dunlop Tortex. For acoustic I'll use .73mm Tortex or one of the celluloid picks (I think they're EB) that came in the box with Eminence Redcoat speakers.

Ultex Jazz III's

Nice warm attack.. but notes stay well defined... just rounder & more musical to my ears.

Re: What pick brand, style and size do you use and why?

.96 Gator Grips here. I like the smiley gator on them. I like 1mm Ultex too, or the Ultex sharp. But the Gators are my fav. I don't like the plasticy 'snap' of the faux tortiseshell or the standard Fender material.
