What pick brand, style and size do you use and why?

Re: What pick brand, style and size do you use and why?

I swear by the dunlop tortex "shark fins", specifically the .60mm version. There are so many different picking surfaces for so many appliciations.
1. Sharp end- precision picking, lead etc.
2. Blunt end- single-note lines when you're digging in
3. Ribs- when you're playing some raspy rhythm

And all kinds of stuff in between. Best pick Ever.

Clayton's up until a year or so ago, because I couldn't wear them out. Had to change to Everly's star pics so I could keep ahold of them. 1.00 or thicker because I beat the heck out of them. The difference in sound was minimal so I've been happy since.

Ultex Jazz III's

Nice warm attack.. but notes stay well defined... just rounder & more musical to my ears.

My cousin swears on these Jazz III Ultex too. I'm curious about it...

Re: What pick brand, style and size do you use and why?

I use a variety of picks--but I prefer heavy ones--mostly I use Tortex 1.14, stone picks or double picks--I found one years ago, and made some to copy it--using Tortex--1.00 mm triangles & regular shaped 1.14 mm ones.

This is a scan off all the picks I had in my cases and my pockets one day-

Why?

I find a heavy pick gives me more control, and I love the different sounds and feel I get with the stone picks and the double picks.

Re: What pick brand, style and size do you use and why?

I go back and forth between a Tortex .88 (green) standard and a Tortex .88 (Green) Sharp. I definitely like the sound feel and thickness of the tortex, but I haven't quite found the right shape. I played those Jazztone picks, and the feel was right, along with the shape, but the thickness wasn't. I think the TIII picks are the closest to the Jazztone shape I used, so those might be my next purchase. I have mass amounts of everything else.

Re: What pick brand, style and size do you use and why?

I've used Ultex and Delrin picks and loved them both. I played Jazz IIIs for a while but now can't stand them... don't know why.

I use Fender California Heavy Picks now. They sound better than the Delrin and Ultex to my ears....

Re: What pick brand, style and size do you use and why?

I pretty much use Jazz III's only. I just love the way they feel and everything about them. I just recently tried some of the tortex Jazz III and I found I like those two. I'm stuck on the heavy gauge ones.

Re: What pick brand, style and size do you use and why?

Regular shape, 1mm nylon.

I dont really care what brand as long as the pick isnt a super dark color.

Re: What pick brand, style and size do you use and why?

I pretty much tried everything I can get my hands on, from thumb picks to 1.50 d'andreas to metal picks.

The first pick which I really liked were the .88 Tortex picks. Then I figured the recoil doesn't really work so well for speed picking and so I switched to the purple ones, the 1.14 Tortex. When they came out with Ultex picks, I tried the 1.14 and figured they lasted much longer (even though they're more expensive) so I've used them ever since. Yes, the decision to go Ultex is pure economics. I still preferred the "feel" of the Tortex and so, just a couple of months ago I bought a pack. I'll start using them again when I've used up all my Ultex's.

Max Grip Jazz III CARBON FIBER!!!

Nice trebly attack, best feel and durability.

Re: What pick brand, style and size do you use and why?

.88 dunlop nylon, it's a dark grey color. I think it's a great balance between being easily strummable (is this a word?) with some flex and it can also play fast and sharp if need be... quite versatile. I also like the fender heavy celluloid, but have been using the dunlop lately.

Re: What pick brand, style and size do you use and why?

For me as long as it's stiff enough (usually 1,00mm or thicker) I'm good to go. And if it has a sharp tip even better.

So mainly I use Jazz III's, normal and XL ones in which ever color (material). Normals on lighter strings and the XL's on thicker strings. Also the Ibanez Paul Gilberts are cool. I like the sharp attack the tip gives me, very direct sound.

I don't have a problem with normal shaped picks so whenever I feel like it I use those. More often they are the Ibanez Steve Vai picks. The mellower attack gives me more fluid sound.

Re: What pick brand, style and size do you use and why?

Standard Dunlop, orange, yellow and green. Orange with my acoustic strung .11-52 . The thin orange keeps me from hitting the light strings too hard. Yellow and green on electrics just depending on the feel.

I started using the Dunlops around 1983 because the standard fender picks would wear too fast and as a kid every quarter counts. Trying all those picks slides and a fender pick was useless after butchering side one of VH1.

Re: What pick brand, style and size do you use and why?

I started out with .88 Tortex picks, then started messing a bit with Jazz III's. I thought they were too small so I started playing with the new MaxGrip 1.14's. I guess I got used to the smaller size of the Jazz picks and found my happy medium about a year ago with Fender 451's. Larger than the Jazz III's but smaller than the usual 351 shape. Great, great picks.

Re: What pick brand, style and size do you use and why?

I've been using Dunlop 1.5mm delrin picks for a while now. The extra thickness is ideal for "Di Meola" style alternate-picking riffs, but aren't so thick that it hampers rhythm playing. They seem to have a decent amount of punch for the thickness, and they're not too small like a lot of the other Jazz style picks.

I use Tortex Green .88 standards and the fender Quivalent .88 greens. the texture is pretty much the same on both.

I use these as they are comfortable and not too thick and not to hard. I dislike thicker picks which are over 1mm. Sometimes on the odd occasion I have swapped about and tried a 1mm pick, it seems it depends on the material for me, this might be a route I may experiment with.

A month or two back I went into the shop and spotted some Red .76's made by some chinese company, bought a couple out of interest, as they had the same texture as my .88's. I have tried them and I prefer these over the .88's just that not many places sell that brand.

Re: What pick brand, style and size do you use and why?

.73 yellow Tortex for me. I started out using Fender mediums and then went to copper and stainless steel picks. Went to the Dunlop tortex around 1990 or so.

I am constantly changing the angle of the pick, choking up and down and even sometimes rocking the pick a bit back and forth so I can get some side action off of it. All of this constant pick positioning is done subconsciously and thicker picks will sometimes flip out into the audience (bedroom floor) while I am changing picking positions. The downside is that they wear out their points fairly quickly and can turn into flub machines before you know it.

I don't understand how most guitarists pick one way and hold the pick consistently from lick to lick. The "English" one can put on the strings with varying pick positioning can make a huuuuge difference on tone IMHO.

Re: What pick brand, style and size do you use and why?

i play with my fingers a lot, like 50-60% of the time, but i use the .88 green tortex or ultex in sizes around there. i like the .9 ultex sharp once the tip wears a little

Re: What pick brand, style and size do you use and why?

Fingernails, because my 2 year old took all my guitar picks and hid them / ate them / threw them down the vents
