What size strings do you use on an LP style guitar for that classic rock/ blues sound? I have 10s on it now and im used to 9s being on the rest of my guitars.....

Re: What size strings????

i use 10's on all my guitars and have been doing so for almost 2 decades.. prefer dean markleys but i will use most brands of 10 -46's they just feel right to me.. thinking about changing one to 11's or 12's as i decided to keep it tuned to c standard

Re: What size strings????

I use a regular 10-46 set, as that's what I use on all my guitars for standard tuning (or tuning down a half step).
However, I think my Les Paul sounds better with an 11 set. I'm thinking it might be the additional mass that requires increased string tension (and heavy picking) to get it really ringing. Probably switch back to that after my next pup swap.

Re: What size strings????

I like the 10-52 skinny top heavy bottom sets.

Re: What size strings????

I'm currently using 10-46, but I have used 11-50 on Gibson scale. Thinking about putting some 9-42s on my super strat.

Re: What size strings????

I use 11's at minimum on shorter-scale guitars like Gibsons. Usually it's 54 on the low end, but on some guitars I prefer 48 or 49. I say 11's at minimum because any lighter feels weird to me. There is no required string for "that classic sound." There were a million classic sounds, and they all have a lot to do with the player, amps, effects, and the like, not really with the strings. IMO, you should pick based on feel. The tone can be adjusted any of a number of ways, but the feel can't.

On Fender guitars, I usually use 11's too. Again, usually with heavy bottoms, but not always. I think one of my 25.5" guitars has straight 10's on it. And there is one guitar (Aerodyne Tele) that I've always kept Ernie's Balls Hybrid Slinkys on (9's on top, 10's on the bottom). I bought it brand new in 2005, and have always kept those strings on it. That guitar is an anomaly; that is just the perfect string set for it, even though it's a set I normally wouldn't like.

For about 10 years, my first, and only, electric guitar (an '85 MIJ Strat) was strung 15–58. That's what I learned to play on. Only in the past 10–15 years have I got into the lighter strings.

Re: What size strings????

These days I use 9-42 sets on my 25.5" scale G&Ls...Fender Super Bullets, as they all have the DR Vibrato. Years ago, I loved the Ball Skinny Top, Heavy Bottom hybrids on my 1960 Strat. Great for when I primarily played rhythm.

The shorter scale Gibsons get 10-46, but I have a couple of Pauls that seem to play better with 9-46 gauge.

I'm still able to use medium gauge 13-56 phosphor bronze strings on my acoustics, but I'm increasingly experiencing stiffness in my hands, so I'm happy to stick with the lighter gauges on my electrics.

Re: What size strings????

Depends what tuning you're in, I'm guessing standard, I'd use 10's. I have 2 Les Paul's, one is in drop c tuning so I have 12-56's on that and the other 10-52's which goes between standard and drop tunings all the way down to c.

Re: What size strings????

I play in open B so my lower strings look like this:

Re: What size strings????

I already wear out and/or corrode out 10s within several hours of play time.

I break the A/D wounds on 9 sets too easily.

11 sets are too much for my CTS.

10,13,17,28,38,48 seems optimal for me, but too expensive to have custom sets done. The gretsch chet atkins rock n blues strings are close. And I have a bunch, but I don't always like the tone with certain guitars. They are hard to find and expensive (my brother got me a bunch through his contacts with gretsch,.otherwise I wouldn't have them)

So yeah..roundabout way of saying 10s...slinky classics, dean markley sigs, and gibson VR get the bulk of play time.

10-46 EB Slinky's here. I put them on all of my guitars. Only one is Gibson scale. For a long time I used 9-42 then 9-46. I like the feel of 10-46 best. I tried a set of 11's on one of my strats several years ago and while it sounded great, they just had too much tension for my style.

i used to play 11, 15, 19, 28, 38, 56 sets for a while and they were so damn nice but having to get them made and the extra cash eventually wasnt worth it
