What's the point in big 100 watt heads?

Re: What's the point in big 100 watt heads?

I looked for a 1-watt JVM head, but I must have missed them.

They're pretty damn expensive whenever I've spotted one. Always thought about having one for recording at home, but I ended up building something instead.

Yeah, I should have researched that joke a little better. Fact is, I got my used JVM 410H for about $200 more than the 1-watt head goes for.

I used to own a Peavey Blues Classic which was a Classic 50 except it came with a 15" speaker
A great amp but the volume had to be on 7 for its sweet spot and I have never had to be that loud at any gig, still waiting for a 25 watt mono tube power amp in a single rack space!

Re: What's the point in big 100 watt heads?

I have 4 100 watt heads currently. They all have half power 50w switches though. when playing mic'd up I use them at half power through a 2/12 at 16 ohms. when we aren't mic'd I bring a 4/12 or 2 2/12s if its a large venue or an outdoor thing.

I've looked at getting smaller heads but I want the midi and the channels/features they have on the larger heads. I think only the tubemeister 36 has what I want, but I'm not sold on el84 tubes. plus its fairly expensive. If I'm spending that I'm getting a blackstar series one 200 watter.

I have 100 4-wattt heads.

Re: What's the point in big 100 watt heads?

I've seen plenty of people using 100 watt heads at home for metal but you can barely get it cooking,
So what is the point of 100 watt head?

100W+ amps have the tranformers that produce the low end that some bands need.

(Bands like) Boris / Sunn O))) will look and sound silly, with six 5E3 amps on stage.

Re: What's the point in big 100 watt heads?

would they? i think it would be bad ass! put them on their sides stacked up, three one way and three the opposite way and jump em all together.

edit: oh. you mean one per guy, i was thinking six per guy

Re: What's the point in big 100 watt heads?

So it's the transformer that makes for the chest thumping low end?

No its the whole power supply that does. If your filter caps aren't up to snuff the lows will mush out also.

Re: What's the point in big 100 watt heads?

So, both the transformers and the filter caps?
That suddenly explains a lot that I had been wondering.
Oh and nice to see you back.

Yeah basically the main caps (remember one of the signs that your amp needs to be recapped is flubby lows) and transformer. Even just the type of circuit will change it. The damping factor plays a part. Amps with resonance controls will effect the amount and type of low end usually by varying the amount of negative feed back. Some are even a shelving EQ where they clip off the lows being sent into the feed back loop so you wind up with more lows going out of the output.

All these things will effect the lows in different ways. Having good transformers and caps can mean that they will continue to give hard hitting uncompressed lows even when pushed hard. The circuit itself will determine how much and what type of lows you get.

Thanks, wouldn't say i'm back but occasionally I do drive bys. Good to see you around.

Which is why a '68 Marshall 1959 sounds looser than a '69 Marshall 1959. One of the biggest differences is the values of the filter capacitors.

I had an old, and I mean 80's, Carvin. I always wondered why it would flub. Now, I know.
Got a 9 year old Line 6 Spider Valve. Even at 3 on the master volume, it loosens the innards. I can't wait'till I can turn it to "5".
