It's a transparent boost with a gain control and a decent buffer.
Like a Maxon Organic Overdrive. Or a number of pedals. Except 2900 dollars more.
Full Disclosure: NOT a Klon owner, or even ever played one. Don't know don't care. If it works for you great. There is no pedal that expensive that I can't find that does the same thing well enough for me for less than $150. YMMV....
I do know a bunch of other guitarists that are just as into note-shaping yet don't use one. Hell, I do that, although I don't try to remotely sound like Beck or BB. There has to be more to it than that.
