what's your best amp for your bedroom ?

Re: what's your best amp for your bedroom ?

I use a vox ac4cl-12 which I find gives me just the right volume and tone for practicing at bedroom volume.

Re: what's your best amp for your bedroom ?

I have an AC4C1-BL ten inch; great little amp but at bedroom volumes a lot of the bass (what little there is) hides. Tubes/speakers help. Still needs an overdrive to get really heavy and sing at low vol., if you have a moderate output guitar.

Re: what's your best amp for your bedroom ?

forgot... I also use my ART SGX 2000 as a practice/headphone amp from time to time.. MUCH more responsive that the GR4/PC but i still prefer that to the sgx..I might experiment with some IR's and run the SGX through the PC interface but i suspect my overall problem is the interface.. Still the SGX still has many usable sounds considering its age IMO so it wont be a total waste of time. Even being as old as it is. the SGX has some really nice and warm cleans and chorus. The distortions are very much a hit and miss affair BUT the sounds are in there. Just got find them

Those big ART rack pieces were life goals for me as a beginner back in the early 90's.

Re: what's your best amp for your bedroom ?

the VOX ac 4 is not an amp for a bedroom
the sounds can be very loud and for the crunch it would be impossible

Although the Yamaha THR sounds great too and is much easier to carry.

I have a Marshall MG15R that I have been using but have since acquired a Roland Microcube and its pretty handy, saves space and not stupid loud. Plus you can plug in an iPod via an aux in port.

I had an SGE II back then...sounded horrible!

Currently for bedroom stuff I use a Peavey VIP 1, or a Fractal AX8 into my studio monitors. Most playing at home is on acoustic, though.

all depends on ones expectations and uses.. Not a fan of some of the sounds but i do like the cleans and choruses.. distortion is eh but i found 1 or 2 stock patches that sounded pretty good..

GR 4 and my goto patch is still my main sound though..Usually I use the SGX when someone is on my PC but sometimes I just like to mess with it just because

Re: what's your best amp for your bedroom ?

I think a 1 watt tube amp (or more likely, a higher wattage tube amp with a 1 watt setting) is the way to go.

1 watt of tube amp in a bedroom can still be really loud, like neighbors-call-the-cops loud. But I prefer the feel over the various solid state/digital practice setups I have had.

I've had 3 tube amps at 1 watt:

1. Marshall DSL1C - Superb feature set (2 channels footswitchable, effects loop, very nice and warm clean channel). Drive channel was a little thin for me, though, even with Deep switch engaged.
2. Peavey 6505 MH, 1 watt setting - Rhythm channel is awesome, I just live there. It goes all the way up to classic metal. Warm and alive and responsive, even at 1 watt. I don't really have a need for the Lead channel; too much gain for me.
3. Hughes & Kettner Tubemeister 18 Twelve, 1 watt setting - Excellent amp, very different from the Peavey. Tone and feel is much more hi-fi, though not sterile. The tone is very vivid and intense, especially when EMGs are driving the amp. Clean channel is a bit bright for my taste, but it could do a decent Vox thing if you're into that. This 1 watt is very loud - I am usually around 7 o'clock volume-wise. In contrast, on the Peavey 6505 MH 1 watt setting, I can get up to 11 or 12 o'clock (depending on gain setting) to get similar volume.

I also spent a good amount of time with the Randall RD1H in a store and *loved* it. I got everything from dirty, edge-of-breakup tones all the way to full-on metal with just a few knob twists. I am seriously considering getting this for a practice rig b/c I prefer fewer knobs and controls.

Re: what's your best amp for your bedroom ?

Marshall SL-5. 5 watts to rock out in your living room, 1 watt for the bedroom

Re: what's your best amp for your bedroom ?

the sl5 is the amp i have hated the most with the vox ad 30 vt xl

i thought the sound was good at low volume too whereas the jmp1 or jvm1 did not sound good to my ears

i tried the dsl5c and it was not so bad but i think i waited for something really rock or really hard crunch (VOX)
or really heavy metal - metal (metallica for example)

about my sl 5: it is really a loud amp
- noise ploc with the footswitch like many users so don't use it
-1 w = you lost all the trebles so, the sound is cold and not interesting at all
-5w : you must play on 3 or more to have the sound so it's very loud even if you play with a cd for example (you must be alone in the tower to do that )

- the sound is rock but a little bit boring
the clean sound is horrible : not like a Fender or a laney lc 15
you really can 't play good music with a sound like that : not beautiful for the ears
like a dark clean channel
not for blues
not for funk so ?

- you can easily destroy your ears with an amp like that

what i like is the design and the feedback if you like great feedback like Satriani or Hackett

with pedals: very very bad too
so? i like the speaker : Celestion vintage 30

sometimes i turn it on i say "let's try, let's see"
so it must not be so bad at high volume but that 's all

i tried the ht 1r : the gain is really big but the speaker is really bad :8" is really bad

I think in this case you really want a digital amp like the Fender mustang. These will give you the high gain saturation sounds you seem to want at any volume. even low watt tube amps need to to be a little loud. Plus there are dozens of Fender Clean models to chose from.

Re: what's your best amp for your bedroom ?

For Joe Satriani or Steve Hackett tones in a bedroom, I'd recommend either the Hughes & Kettner Tubemeister 18 (or 20 or 36), using the 1 watt setting, or the Blackstar HT-1.

To me, they have very similar vibes - modern, clean, hi-fi, clear even at high gain. I think the Tubemeister tone has slightly more depth, but blindfolded, I probably couldn't tell the difference between the 2.

For both amps, yes, run them through at least a 1x12 cab; the Tubemeister 18 also comes in a 12" combo. I don't think I've ever heard a good-sounding 1x8. Good-sounding 1x10's do exist, but it's a different sound - more mid-focused - than 1x12.

Re: what's your best amp for your bedroom ?

thanks for the Fender mustang
Hughes&Kettner Tubemeister 18 Twelve Combo : ok !
the ht1r : i liked it in the shop but the 8" speaker is not enough

the opposite : the amp i like the most is my Laney lc 15 - 10
love at the first sight :) or the first sound
and if i think it's too loud
it's really a great amp with any pedals

except if you look for a real ac 30 or jcm 800 or jtm45 maybe

i have the sound of Joe with the Laney and pedals ! yes! even if i have not 4X12" cabinet and jvm the sounds are really beautiful

for Hackett i am big fan too
i think he uses a jmp

Re: what's your best amp for your bedroom ?

18w !!!! loud!!

there are the VHT Amps too

yes if the amps are too loud because of the tubes, you know i have a VOX DA5 and it's really rock
cold sound but rock and versatile

Re: what's your best amp for your bedroom ?

Another great bedroom amp, although simple (no modeling) is the Tech21 Trademark 10. It sounds great recorded, too via the XLR out.

The Vintage 30 is not very bedroom friendly. It is really loud: 100 db from 1 watt. Running a 5 watt amp through a Vintage 30 is like a 10 watt amp through a 97 db speaker. And 10 watts is already about 1/2 as loud as a 100 watt monster.
