I"m not really an EC fan, but everytime I hear the live version of "Crossroads", especially the second solo- I still get goosebumps!
Dear SDUG,
I would at this time like to formerly apologize for my choices regarding my favorite solos. I am apologizing at this time because had focussed on the "favorite" portion of the post while glossing over the "kicked you in the balls" clarification regarding the actual choices. Understand that I am in no way apologizing for my acknowledgement of my love of the aforementioned and posted solos. They stand as a pair of solos that I have always enjoyed and will continue to enjoy. However, they are not the solos that impacted my gonadinal tissue when I heard them. In light of this gross discrepancy and the intended desire of the original poster, I submit the following selections which are more in line with this thread's intent and my true feelings regarding highly impactful solos, as opposed to those which I simply find highly enjoyable.
Randy Rhoads - Mr. Crowley, all three sections!
Zakk Wylde - No More Tears
Mathias Jabs - The Same Thrill / Still Loving You (Can't decide!)
Brad Gillis/Jeff Watson - Don't Tell Me You Love Me
Gary Richrath - Ridin' The Storm Out (Live)
Ted Nugent - Stranglehold
Ronnie LeTekro - Ready To Leave
Yngwie Malmsteen - Evil Eye/I Am A Viking/Krakatau
George Lynch - Tooth & Nail/Kiss Of Death/Wicked Sensation
Neil Schon - Still They Ride
Rik Emmett - Fight the Good Fight
David Gilmore - Comfortably Numb (Delicate Sound version) / Pink & Velvet
If we are throwing My Sharona in there, we also can't let this little 80's gem go by unmentioned:
Neil Geraldo on Pat Benatar's Heartbreaker. He rips it!
The first solo that made me want to learn to play guitar was Ritchie Blackmore on Rainbow's "All Night Long".
i may get burned at the stake but another one that kicked me in the balls was ted nugents total self glorification, look how awsome i am,wank fest solo on strangle hold.
its not about whos the best guitarist of what ever genre you like, its about that one song, that one solo that just kicked your balls the first time you heard it.........for me its vivian campbell,on dios ..rainbow in the dark, and he was only i think 19 when it was recorded...dig out your holy diver and check it out.
Dear SDUG,
Mathias Jabs - Still Loving You
The fills are Mathias but the solo is Rudy
I'll agree though that "The Same Thrill" is a kick in the balls powerful solo-one of my faves from Mathias
Mathias has/had the lead guitar player's dream job- guitar fills everywhere through every song, contrasting riffy/choppy/counterpoint rhythm work behind the main straight away power chording of a rhythm player, and then of course taking the lead on 99% of the songs.
i always thought neil schon played tasty solos, but not a big journey fan at all
Hey, everyone's got their own opinions on this. You won't get burned at the stake, but I humbly suggest you spend more time listening to Jimi Hendrix and the British blues/rock guitarists of the late 1960's. Old Teddy's just not in their league. .....
