whats your favorite guitar solo?

Re: whats your favorite guitar solo?

wow, i could second so many of these.....but I'll add The Cult's "Peace Dog" to the list...it really kicked me the first time....

Re: whats your favorite guitar solo?

Dear SDUG,

I would at this time like to formerly apologize for my choices regarding my favorite solos. I am apologizing at this time because had focussed on the "favorite" portion of the post while glossing over the "kicked you in the balls" clarification regarding the actual choices. Understand that I am in no way apologizing for my acknowledgement of my love of the aforementioned and posted solos. They stand as a pair of solos that I have always enjoyed and will continue to enjoy. However, they are not the solos that impacted my gonadinal tissue when I heard them. In light of this gross discrepancy and the intended desire of the original poster, I submit the following selections which are more in line with this thread's intent and my true feelings regarding highly impactful solos, as opposed to those which I simply find highly enjoyable.

Randy Rhoads - Mr. Crowley, all three sections!
Zakk Wylde - No More Tears
Mathias Jabs - The Same Thrill / Still Loving You (Can't decide!)
Brad Gillis/Jeff Watson - Don't Tell Me You Love Me
Gary Richrath - Ridin' The Storm Out (Live)
Ted Nugent - Stranglehold
Ronnie LeTekro - Ready To Leave
Yngwie Malmsteen - Evil Eye/I Am A Viking/Krakatau
George Lynch - Tooth & Nail/Kiss Of Death/Wicked Sensation
Neil Schon - Still They Ride
Rik Emmett - Fight the Good Fight
David Gilmore - Comfortably Numb (Delicate Sound version) / Pink & Velvet

Aceman,

Now that's more like it! I knew you had it in you, Wow! Ronnie Le Tekro not alot of people know about him, good choice one of my all time favorite songs was "King of Seven Seas"

Re: whats your favorite guitar solo?

+1

to "since I've been loving" . I still get goose bumps listening to that song. Most of the picks are good but we're missing some stuff from Slash

Dirty Little Thing- Velvet Revolver

I have more but I'm too lazy to type it all

Re: whats your favorite guitar solo?

The first solo that made me want to learn to play guitar was Ritchie Blackmore on Rainbow's "All Night Long". It's a short solo but it's so well constructed and builds to a great ending. Sort of a mini-lesson on how to put together a great solo for a shorter song. There are longer, faster and more technical solos from the Man in Black, but "All Night Long" still remains an all-time favorite solo of mine.

Other monumental rock solos in my humble opinion:

- EVH - "Eruption" (the solo that launched a decade or more of guitar history)
- George Lynch/Dokken - "In My Dreams" (it's got a ton of Lynch-isms in it)
- Marc Richard Diglio/XYZ - "Face Down In The Gutter" (the most overlooked '80's/'90's player)
- Andy Timmons - "Carpe Diem"
- Randy Rhoads - "Crazy Train" or "Flying High Again"

Re: whats your favorite guitar solo?

If we are throwing My Sharona in there, we also can't let this little 80's gem go by unmentioned:

Neil Geraldo on Pat Benatar's Heartbreaker. He rips it!

Great call, Aceman! Neil's an overlooked guitarist and if you can find any Pat Benatar bootlegs, you'll hear just how solid he is as a live player. My first rock concert was Pat on the "Fire and Ice" tour and Neil's playing was just perfect backing her up.

Re: whats your favorite guitar solo?

- Robin Trower : Daydream, from the Trower Live! album---end solo.

- Ace: Rocket Ride. Silly tune, but he digs deeper than normal for that one.

- Trey Anastasio: The last solo in Down with Disease. Neat little repeating phrase.

- Jeff Beck...Cause We've Ended As Lovers...gives me chills, man.

But, here is my current fav of all time. I post this clip whenever I can. The Humbler taking Sleepwalk to the end...

Speaking of Blackmore, the solos on Lazy (Machine Head album) I think are his best. He's just flying on that fretboard, and doing some very creative stuff. Everything comes together on that song.

Hey, everyone's got their own opinions on this. You won't get burned at the stake, but I humbly suggest you spend more time listening to Jimi Hendrix and the British blues/rock guitarists of the late 1960's. Old Teddy's just not in their league. While he used to brag about having the 'fastest right hand in the businsss', what he did with his left hand wasn't all that impressive and I could never get moved by his solos because of that. God knows I tried, being a Detroit boy and all.

Re: whats your favorite guitar solo?

Michael Schenker:UFO - Try Me, off the Lights Out record...
One of the simplest solos to play but gave me goosebumps first time I heard it.

its not about whos the best guitarist of what ever genre you like, its about that one song, that one solo that just kicked your balls the first time you heard it.........for me its vivian campbell,on dios ..rainbow in the dark, and he was only i think 19 when it was recorded...dig out your holy diver and check it out.

Re: whats your favorite guitar solo?

Dear SDUG,

Mathias Jabs - Still Loving You

The fills are Mathias but the solo is Rudy :D

I'll agree though that "The Same Thrill" is a kick in the balls powerful solo-one of my faves from Mathias

Mathias has/had the lead guitar player's dream job- guitar fills everywhere through every song, contrasting riffy/choppy/counterpoint rhythm work behind the main straight away power chording of a rhythm player, and then of course taking the lead on 99% of the songs.

Re: whats your favorite guitar solo?

But it seems that Rudy's are more memorable. Rudy takes the all the slow melodic ones. Jabs is the king of the ballsy fills though!

Not many are. I agree 100% with this. Those boys are the big league allstars. The heavy hitters. They set the standard and its a very high standard. One of the reason the British guys whoes' body of work came a bit later such as Gilmore, Moore, Holdsworth, Knopler..ect.. are so good too, was that the bar was already set so high. We Americans outside of some the foundation blues masters seem to forget that it's not fully about speed or level of difficulty and that type of stuff as well.
