When you hear the word PLEXI...

Re: When you hear the word PLEXI...

Alot of early Zep was a Supro Combo.

Only the FIRST album

Malcolm and Angus both use old Marshalls, but as Scott said, alot of it is JTM-45s, and even their 100W amps are fitted with KT66s or 6L6s instead of EL34s.

Mal and Angus have both used lots of different Marshalls over the years...JTM-45's, JTM-45/100's, Plexi's (1987's and 1959's) as well as even JCM 800's but the classic AC/DC Tone comes from either a JTM-45 or a JTM-45/100...those amps do use KT66's

EVH used 6CA7s in his Plexi, but that is one of my favorite tones.

A 6CA7 is a tube that can be run in ANY EL34 based amp with no mods other than setting the bias and the truth is that a lot of people couldn't even tell the difference between 6CA7's and EL34's, however 6CA7's do have a slightly different tone...slightly glassier highs and more solid lows to my ears.

Jimi used 6550s in his Marshalls (as does Zakk) to make them louder and cleaner.

I NEVER heard of Jimi using 6650's in his Marshalls...now he did use Sunn amps from time to time and a lot of those did have 6550's but I NEVER saw his Marshalls with anything but KT66's or EL34's...

I've heard that he did use them (but I would guess that it was late in his career) from a couple of mags (an early 80's "Marshall Law" flyer and later in a "Guitar Shop" article) but, as you mention, the only two Hendrix amps in existance are equipped with EL34s and KT66s. His tech has mentioned making mods to his amps but he said nothing of tube types used. It could be just urban legend as well.
