So I get my new RD today, and its perfect , EXCEPT it only weighs 8 pounds!
I figured since my buddies was 9.6 pounds, which i love m they'd all be the same. WRONG!
Im heartbroken.
Look for this on the trading post
( need a Marshall or Mesa hint hint)!
Now I see what you guys were saying is true about every Gibson being an individual plank of wood and different in tone.
From now on when I sell this one, I'll ask the weight of any guitar I buy.
This is actually LIGHTER than the sg classic I sold cause I didnt like the weight ( 8.7 pounds).
I'm scorched!

You're a dork!! Why should the weight even matter? Does it sound and play good? That's what matters!!

For what it's worth, my Gibson RD Silverburst is probably somewhere around 10-11 pounds. It's heavy.

The weight of the instrument should not be your sole determining factor. I don't think weight = good every time. The real question is how it sounds and how it feels?

I must admit, this thread title makes me laugh.:)

well, I know it aint cause its a 1 piece body or something, caues i see thewhere the pieces are joined.
I was definitely looking for a big heavey solid piece of lumber here though, mainly casue I was consdering a SuperD in the bridge for a 70's Paul sound... so it aint gonna do me no good. Might sounds great. Its a great player for sure.

Re: Why do I keep buying toy guitars??

If it sounds good and plays well I wouldn't worry about weight or lack of it. Also the rationale that it is supposed to sound like a LP is suspect, because each model has slightly different characteristics as dictated by their construction. However if you know you aren't going to bond with it better to flip it unmodified.

You and Jolly can swap.. You get your heavy axe, John saves his back...:naughty:

Re: Why do I keep buying toy guitars??

I'd be stoked if they sent me a lightweight RD. It probably resonates nicely.

I thought the goal was to avoid boat anchors!

Re: Why do I keep buying toy guitars??

I guess I thought the "heavy guitar = great tone" theories went out in the late 70s. Personally, I like guitars that are either really heavy or really light, but that factor has nothing to do with tone for me. I have a tendency to be animated onstage and a heavy guitar will stay right where it is (Newton's 1st law of Motion) whereas a light guitar will go everywhere I do. In either case, my hands know where to be. An 8 or 9 pound guitar isn't a lightweight instrument (Parker Flys have to be soaking wet to weigh in at 5 lbs). So, I'm thinking that your thought process in relation to playability, tone, comfort, etc may be a bit skewed. But, again, that's just my two cents...

And I think I may have to take exception to your quote about Gibsons being a "plank of wood". Gibsons are works of art. Some are good, some are bad. If you want to see a "plank", check out a Fender. I love/hate them just as much as Gibson, but no two guitars are EVER the same.

I'm raising the flag. :bsflag: Why does it matter?

Pics of it on the scale or it didn't happen.

Gee, my new guitar really looks terrific and sounds great.
I only wish it weighed enough to convince me that it should sound good.
