Why do you like Les Pauls?

Re: Why do you like Les Pauls?

I started off a playing Fenders so naturally I'm a fender guy, but I was inspired by Steve Clark, Slash & Hendrix so of course I'm going to also enjoy Gibsons... I love Fenders, Gibsons, Kramers, Charvels, Jacksons... I own em all & I love every single one :naughty:

Re: Why do you like Les Pauls?

The looks, tone, playability.....everything really. They're classy guitars. They work for me, my playing style, and the style of music I play.

Re: Why do you like Les Pauls?

I don't.Seeing how so much of his definitive work was recorded with a Tele, you might. :p

I don't dispute that. I was just giving a reason I like Les Pauls. No argument intended, sorry.

Re: Why do you like Les Pauls?

Feedback much appreciated. Yeah I guess I'm mainly a fender guy because so many of my influences were rockin strats (most of the time anyways), like Frusciante, Clapton, Hendrix, SRV, Jeff Beck...ahh you get the point. Although The Doors are my favorite band, and I'm a big Zep fan so its lookin like time to start checking these out.
Also quick question, some of you guys mentioned PAF's..I'm not sure I know what these are, can someone elaborate?

No argument intended at my end either. I just wonder where Gibby would be today if Page had played onstage what he played in the studio.

Re: Why do you like Les Pauls?

Besides the obvious Ace Frehley influence....

The guitar just FEELS like rock. It is heavy, it is solid. It just SOUNDS like rock. The power of the humbuckers, the pushing mids, the thickness. I like the 24 3/4 scale.

I have played one for so long nothing else feels quite right. I have owned all sorts of other guitars over the past 30 years. At some point I just decided that there was a reason that I kept coming back to them. I'd play a tele for two weeks and go back to a Les Paul for two months. A strat for a week and a Les Paul for three months.

I often wonder about Gibson in general.

  • The look.
  • The sound.
  • The feel.
  • The neck angle.
  • The TOM bridge & stop-bar tailpiece.
  • The classy 3+3 headstock.
  • The LP neck humbucker is one of the guitar tones.
  • A fairly conservative-looking LP is at home in just about any setting.
  • Carved top is fun and easy to play.
  • Curves, curves, curves. Few guitars are that sexy.
  • Variety of brands, models, finishes, & other options.
  • It's the guitar that at least half the others wish they sounded like.

Re: Why do you like Les Pauls?

The Les Paul gets it done night after night all aross the planet, in eery country, on every stage, It walks the walk, It's been there and done that.

That heavy chunky sweet LP tone is the essence of rock.

Re: Why do you like Les Pauls?

I own strats, superstrats, and teles, but you can't replace a Les Paul for the sound. Once you get a good one, you know.

Re: Why do you like Les Pauls?

Simply put, I like LPs because of THAT TONE! An LP just ROARS through a great crunchy, Marshall-ish amp. That big, fat, sustaining tone. Even when on the bridge pickup, it's still a much chunkier tone (for me) than a Strat.

I've been playing for 26 years. Probably for at least 20 of that, I was a Strat guy. That was what was comfortable for me. It's still a much more comfortable guitar for me to play, at least in terms of the forearm contour. There have been times where I thought about grabbing a rasp/file and just making one of my LP clones (ESP EC400AT, 400VF, and 401VF) more comfortable. But luckily, I'm not crazy. One of these days I'm gonna build a Warmoth LP clone and carve a forearm contour in it before a put a finish on.

Anyways, I just can't get the same big, fat, sustaining tone out of a Strat. Granted, I haven't tried one of those mahogany Strats. I really would like to. For cleans, I still love the chimey, spanky, single-coil strat tone better than my LPs (even with coil-splitting engaged). But since I spend most of my time in the rock/old-school metal world these days... the LP is king for me right now.

Re: Why do you like Les Pauls?

I've only played a good Les Paul once.

I've tried two Gibbos and they definitely weren't the good stuff.
But I did try a Epi LP that was made with love for sure.
What did I love? The sustain and fat tone, the looks and the feel of that fat slab of wood.
It resonated like crazy and man did I play the hell out of it. It was in a pawn shop and I couldn't afford it.

God knows I'm gonna be lost the day I find a good Gibson LP.
Gonna pop some '59s on it and that's gonna be it!

Re: Why do you like Les Pauls?

The first guitar tone I fell in love with was a Les Paul. I played a friend's LP through a Fender Twin Reverb and I was hooked. I worked and saved for quite a while and went out and bought my own. Problem solved.

I have several LPs now, one of which I've spanked for 35 years now, and he's on his second set of frets. I've swapped out more pickups than I can remember in Lester, and right now he's got a Jazz / Pearly Gates setup with the Jimmy Page four push/pull pot configuration. I can dial up about any tone i want with this puppy.

I also have a few Strats and Teles, so they get a lot of playing time too. It takes a lot of colors to paint a masterpiece.

Re: Why do you like Les Pauls?

Les Paul's may be the best electric guitar in the world for rock at least. But, i like mine because I feel like I need a decent, but ultimately a beater hardtail guitar. It fits the bill perfectly and am glad to own a real live Gibby LP. :)

Yeah, and y'all read correctly; my Gibson les Paul is my beater guitar. :eyecrazy:

This statement make no sense...Hendrix played a Strat about 99% more than any Gibson.

crunch and sustain and full bodied tone.

but i prefer the feel of a Fender. on Fender i like the 7.25¨ radius. and that the strings are lower to the body.
