why don't I like gibson v's, is it the pickups?

Re: why don't I like gibson v's, is it the pickups?

I can't imagine a thin sounding Explorer or V, if we are talking about regular mahogany/mahogany/rosewood Gibson models. If anything they should be too driven and aggressive.

I'd check the bridge and bridge posts next.

You can't judge a guitar just based on the stock setup and electronics. If you threw in a '59/JB or a PG/Custom set, it would probably sound great.

+1. My theory is that it's a fluke if the stock PU's happen to be the best-sounding ones for any particular guitar, regardless of it's price. Odds are some aftermarket set will beat them. Whatever you need from your V, I'm sure you can find a standard-production PU that will give it to you.

B.F. Gibbons was quoted as saying that until he got his LP, the first guitar he found that had "the sound" was a 58 V...leads me to think that if you find just the right pickup set, you might love that guitar.

Jolly's tone rules.

Having said that, I've heard too many great tones from V's (Schenker and some VH comes to mind).

i'm thinkin like P-Rails in the bridge, with the push/pulls on the knobs to control that crazy thing, then a Phat Cat in the middle and a 59 in the neck and then i DARE you to find a more capable electric guitar.

Classic and vintage-stylee yet totally metal. Hot humbuckers, cool ones, and P90's galore. Not too complicated but totally versatile. Matches your tuxedo...

look for some good PAF like pickups and you should have a good sounding V. PAFs or p90's are always good pickups for those guitars as far as I am concerned.

That's what the originals had, and there was some great guitar work done with them.
