Re: Why??(Marshall issues)

You aren't they only one, I for one can't stand vintage 30 speakers
and would much rather have the 75s. Although I usually run 2 of them in an X pattern with 2 G12H30 speakers. Gets the sound I want!!!

Back to topic; it sounds to me like that cab and your amp don't get along, much like I never had good luck with running my dual rec through my marshall cabs. I run my splawn, bogner and marshall heads through them without issue but they just don't get along with the Rec.

Also to my ears slant cabs sound muffled and all around more "crappy" to my ears than their straight counterparts.

Once again, it seems I'm the minority around here....

I like MFs JMPs and 800s better than plexis
I like 75s better than V30s
I tend to like (some) DiMarzio pups more than my faves from Duncan
I Like Vs and explorers and MLs better than strats or teles or les pauls
I think boutique amps/pedals are overrated
I like Adrian Smith better than Dave Murray

I'm gonna go give Al Sharpton a call..I need some help defending my civil rights around this place

See my responses in bold. :6:

I like MFs JMPs and 800s better than plexis - Me too, though I do like hot rodded 800's a little more. :6:

I Like Vs and explorers and MLs better than strats or teles or les pauls - I think everyone knows what I like by now...lol
I think boutique amps/pedals are overrated - I agree 100%. There's a few that are worth it, but a majority are a clone of something else.
I like Adrian Smith better than Dave Murray - I like Dave but I love Adrian's chops.

Jacob, try a different amp with the Marshall cab as an experiment, tube preferably. I bet you'll find it sounds totally different and more there. I don't think it's the cab....in fact, I know it's not the cab. It's the amp/cab/speaker matchup.

ERicH, that's my guess as well. The rockdrivers are known for being completely unlike anything else so it does't suprise me they are so drastically different. Oh well. At least the two cabs sound good together! I'll just hafta deal with a so so cab here at home. My other is staying at the practice space.

Re: Why??(Marshall issues)

No idea, it's brand new from another guy who used it like, 5 hours total. Should I try that? But do I run the risk of doin anything to it? Just switch the wires on the output?

Jacob, why not take it to a tech, to have it wired at 8 ohms? It wouldn't cost much and should solve the problem.

Re: Why??(Marshall issues)

do you know if the speakers are phased properly?

sometimes, swapping the two wires on the back of the speaker puts them in proper phase and opens them up
good luck
t4d

If they are correct and I change them...will it do anything to the cab or amp? I'm gonna try this if it's safe.

This is very true. I could wire it for 8 ohms and the cabs would match. I just hate messin with a new cab! It's got easy connectors on the wires too so it shouldn't be a pain.

Re: Why??(Marshall issues)

How can you wire 4 16 ohm speakers for 8 ohms?

All serial = 64 ohms
All parallel = 4 ohms
Series/Parallel = 16 ohms

He'd have to disconnect to of the speakers and use the other two wired in parallel. Or just replace all 4 with 8 ohm speakers and wire it series/parallel.

Thats why I suggested a tech, I figured Jacob was as clueless to speaker wiring, as I am. :)

Gottcha. Well, the tech will tell him pretty much what I said. Those are his only options to get it to 8 ohms.

A. Wire 2 speakers in parallel, disconnect the other 2.
B. Replace all 4 with 8 ohm speakers wired series/parallel.

And it still won't fix the problem of the cab just plain not working well with the head.

Replacing the speakers with 4 that will would fix it. ;)

And Kindred is right, those speakers in it now aren't even broken in yet.

Re: Why??(Marshall issues)

There was a cool section in my Mesa-Boogie tech manual about cab wiring setup and "safe mismatches." I'll try to find it when I get home.

Re: Why??(Marshall issues)

Its never going to sound right unless the impedance is matched. The OT is expecting 8 and it's getting twice the load. My advice is to sell the speakers as Like New, get some 8 ohm speakers off evilbay to match the impedance of the Attax, and those can be any speakers you want, and you'll be happy.

I could do that, problem is I have no idea what to get other than rockdrivers....and you can't get them anywhere.

Do you think you could sell the Marshall (break even and/or gain profit) and look for another H&K cab with those same speakers? It sounds like you already know what you like.

Nearly impossible. The new cabs sound nothing alike and the same cab has only showed up on ebay once in 3 years....at 500 bucks plus shipping. I really would kill for another though.

Re: Why??(Marshall issues)

As earlier stated, you can get mojotone Vintage 30 clones for cheap and they are excellent speakers. I would say that they are at least equal to if not superior to current production vintage 30's and roughly HALF the price. Talk to ScottF about buying a full set of 8 ohm Mojotone Vintage 30 clones. They are made in the USA with english speaker cones and all other parts are US made. HOW CAN YOU GO WRONG?

Re: Why??(Marshall issues)

So much HATE for the 75's. They aren't nearly that bad. I'm in the camp witt JeffB and Erik. I'm goibg to do an X of 75's and Greenbacks in me 4x12 sometime soon. However, the 75's sound so much more open, balanced and have a better bass response than the V30's...IMO of course.
