Wiring Question:. Mixing a Fender Humbucker and Duncan Single Coils

X-Files Duckbucker
Hey everyone! Before I go firing up my soldering iron I wanted to see if I am on the right track. I have a strat with an HSS setup with all Duncans as follows:. APH-1 Humbucker (Full-size A2P), a Duncan SLS-1 RWRP lipstick tube, and a Duncan SLS-1 lipstick tube. I got my dirty little mitts on a Fender Shawbucker and want to put it in place of the APH-1. From my understanding, Duncan's and Fender pickups are magnetically opposite. So here are my questions:

1.) Since this is a humbucker, does that matter?
2.). If it does matter, what options do I have to avoid being out of phase? I can think of three and here is what I am guessing from easiest to hardest:
- a.) Swap the two lipstick tubes so the RWRP is in the neck position.
- b.) Flip the Shawbucker's magnet
- c.) Wire the Shawbucker backwards

So what say you, oh God's of Wiring?

Re: Wiring Question:. Mixing a Fender Humbucker and Duncan Single Coils

Flip the bridge magnet if you want it to be in-phase and noiseless when split with the middle in the 2nd position.

Re: Wiring Question:. Mixing a Fender Humbucker and Duncan Single Coils

1-No

2- Answer choice B. Flip the bridge magnet if you want it to be in-phase and noiseless when split with the middle in the 2nd position.

Since it doesn't take into account which coil he wants to have active when splitting, this is a completely useless answer.

This is assuming he's interested in splitting in the first place, which hasn't even been addressed.

Re: Wiring Question:. Mixing a Fender Humbucker and Duncan Single Coils

That is assuming he wants to split to the inner slug coil. I find it impossible to assume that he wants to split to the outer screw coil on a ShawBucker, that would be a surefire recipe for ice picks. But if he does, then he would choose answer choice C.

If splitting doesn't matter you can do either, but not both, to get the same results.

Re: Wiring Question:. Mixing a Fender Humbucker and Duncan Single Coils

It also depends on where he wants to position the slug coil.

But let's back up a bit:
If you have a non-stacked, non-Antiquity Hot Texas Duncan RWRP single in the middle and you want to combine it with a slug coil from a Duncan humbucker and have it be hum-cancelling and in-phase do you have to flip a magnet, yes or no?

Is the polarity of a ShawBucker the same as a Duncan Humbucker?

I have a feeling you don't know the answer to at least one of these questions or don't realize that the answers to the questions matter.

I ask because I find myself having to bail you out of incorrect polarity/phase advice all too often.

PS and FWIW:

Some guys like auto-splitting to the outside coil when combining it with the middle. Are they wrong?

My EBMM Silhouette does this. Are you telling me that EBMM is also wrong?

Re: Wiring Question:. Mixing a Fender Humbucker and Duncan Single Coils

Come to think of it, the original ShawBucker one was designed to pair well with single coils without being split. I assume that's the one the OP has. It would most definitely sound too thin and bright if split to the screw coil, wheras the Virtual PAF in the bridge of a Silhouette was built with splitting in mind.

Re: Wiring Question:. Mixing a Fender Humbucker and Duncan Single Coils

No doing any splits on this guitar. Here's what I did after reading the Duncan FAQs. I states with a a fender SC in the bridge, you swap the RWRP pickupyp the neck, then reverse the wiring so the white lead goes to ground and the black ground goes to the switch. Worked perfectly with my Shawbucker, so now the lipstick tubes are magnetically and wiring-wise in-phase with the Shawbucker. I tested it and it sounds right. Thanks for the help guys.

Re: Wiring Question:. Mixing a Fender Humbucker and Duncan Single Coils

Are you always this presumptuous?

I'm sorry for assuming that the stock pickup in your Silhoutte is what EBMM advertised as the stock pickup in their Silhouette. I was way out of line, please forgive me.

Re: Wiring Question:. Mixing a Fender Humbucker and Duncan Single Coils

Except that it hasn't always been the stock pickup. Stop pretending to know everything.

Re: Wiring Question:. Mixing a Fender Humbucker and Duncan Single Coils

If guessing a bridge pickup based off of prior knowledge is knowing everything, than I apologize for my omniscience. I see no point in carrying on this discussion. The OP has solved their own issue, and here we are, with mentioning the stock pickup on the current line of EBMM Silhouettes and you losing your head.

Re: Wiring Question:. Mixing a Fender Humbucker and Duncan Single Coils

...and now you presume to know my mental state.

Priceless.

???

Y'all both idiots. The thread is over, get over yourselves. I'd lock this thread right now if I were admin. I had more meaningful debates than this in 3rd grade art class.

Re: Wiring Question:. Mixing a Fender Humbucker and Duncan Single Coils

You're welcome to answer wiring questions at any time. With any luck you'll get the information right. You can even use google to look smart, your success at witty humor not withstanding.

Anyhow and FWIW:

I recommend thinking twice whenever Christopher suggests flipping a magnet, or how to split a humbucker in order to pair it with a single coil for that matter. Thankfully the OP isn't splitting his ShawBucker. If he ever decides to split a humbucker I'll be more than happy to provide diagrams in an attempt to help.

Furthermore, I agree with locking this thread to prevent additional useless and dim-witted quips.
