Worth it?

EDIT: **see bump further down**

Found a Carlsbro Scorpion II 2x12 on ebay local pickup, £25 at the moment (though that will probably change). Solid state amp but has extra jacks to let you use your own head with it. Speakers are Celestion 12" 20 watt 8 ohms, can't make out the model number.

I can't find any information on it.

Given the price might it be worth picking up, maybe fitting some V30s in and waiting until I can afford a decent head? I currently have a Vox Valvetronix VT40+ and a cruddy Yamaha guitar.

There's also a Marshall 1960A cab for £200 but I can't afford it :(

Cheers!

Re: Worth it?

It's been a long time since I've used 1 of those, and I think your Valvetronix would probably sound better tbh! Unless the plan is just to use it as a cab?

If that's the case, why not save the money you're going to spend on that and a pair of V30s and just put that towards a cab?

Re: Worth it?

Meh. I'd pass. It's an old solid state amp that didn't sound that awesome to begin with. Your Valvetronix sounds better.
Also, old SS amps were cheap, and the components have drifted so much that it'll probably be noisier than it was 30 years ago.
That's why he's selling it so cheap.

Re: Worth it?

Indeed I'm aware the actual amplification part of it will sound bad lol. I'm just thinking of using a separate head with it - effectively using it as a cabinet.

Re: Worth it?

Probably depends on the final price. Local Pickup will restrict the pool of potential buyers, which will tend to keep the price down. But if it is day 2 or 3 of a 7-day auction or if you see a lot of bidding activity on it, that price will probably at least double before the auction ends.

If you can't find information about the amp, you really don't know how good those speakers are. If you want a cabinet, you'd probably be better off to just buy a cabinet. Or buy speakers and build a cabinet.

So it would be great if it had different speakers and a different amplifier?

Re: Worth it?

More or less, yeah. :p

Problem is I can't find any decent 2x12 cabs, even empty, anywhere near that price. Seems like it wouldn't be worth it though.

Re: Worth it?

You have a funny concept of "worth it" Its not at all what you want but its "worth it".. quite curious really

If something is cheap enough and you're curious then alot of things can be 'worth it' :D

Whether it's a good/useful buy or not is another thing entirely.

Re: Worth it?

^That. Something is better than nothing at a price like that. You forget I'm currently playing a shocking guitar through a sub-standard DSP amp. ;)

Also, question. Is the battered-but-working Marshall 1960A worth it at £200? I got like £300 for my birthday and could sell my existing Vox VT40+ too. Problem is, I'd have to buy a head still with the remaining money :/

Re: Worth it?

Found a JCM 800 4212 2x12 cab for £290 on local pickup. Has 2 Celestion G12T-75 speakers. Really pushing my budget but would it be worth the extra?

My only other option is a 4x12 Marshall 1960A for £190, and trying to find a decent head for it.

Re: Worth it?

The better deal would be the 1960A cab. But I'm a 2x12 guy, and would go with the JCM 800 2x12.

Re: Worth it?

Yeah I'm starting to think it's a better option. The JCM800 combo I could bring on my bus to college, albeit it would be a pain in the ass, but still doable. The 1960A, there's no way in hell that thing's going on a bus lol.

Is it true the JCM800 head has the same PCB schematic as the combo? Seems a bit odd they sell for the same price, if not more.
