Okay, let's say you have three grand, and you have to choose between buying a new PRS and a new Gibson. Which do you choose and why? No cop outs - you have to buy one or the other, and you can't spend $1500 and buy something else with the rest of the money. It all goes to one guitar.

I realize the poll is invalid, but I don't want a Rob Option.

Personally, I'd go with PRS. Not only (IMO) do you get a much more attractive looking guitar for the price, but I find the average PRS much more playable than even a great Gibson. I have two USA PRS and have owned one Gibson, so it's not like I'm regurgitating internet speak. I just find PRS a better value and a better instrument.

What say ye?

I dunno, mang. I haven't played many PRS. When I have, they have been nice but have felt strange to me, like someone else's guitar. I don't know another way to describe it. It's probably as much about the look as it is the feel -- like a hippie-sandwich bass, it just feels alien to me, regardless of how great an instrument it might be.

I guess I'm lucky that I don't feel a strong need for either right now. Maybe an LP Classic, if it felt and sounded right.

I voted Gibson. My one and only guitar for the past two years straight has been a PRS. Even though it's a less expensive MIK PRS and the USA ones may sound better, I need a change of pace.

I would have say Gibson. I love the look of the PRS but like LPB said there is a weird vibe when I play one. My Les Paul and SG felt like I owned them for years the second I picked them up.

My only P90 guitar is an Ibanez Talman and although I like the pickups I don't care for the guitar that much. I would consider replacing it with either a SG or another Squire Custom II guitar. I know both are within my price range but I am not aware of anything in the PRS line?

Not sure how that relates to the thread?
I would take either a SG with P90's or a Squier Custom II Tele over a PRS. I wouldn't consider spending $3,000 for anything.

I've played a whole bunch of Paul Reed Smith guitars and I've never really been able to find one that I could gel with enough to make me buy it.

Prs. Because this thing is mouthwatering.

To me at least. And Gibson doesn't make such things.

My guitarist has one of those, it's a fantastic guitar:

Considering that every last guitar PRS has ever made is completely hideous to me, I'd have to say Gibson. That doesn't even get into my general dislike of the way PRSs feel to play.

Re: You Have To Buy A New Gibson or PRS - Which Do You Choose?

Never played a PRS I liked and I have played ones Paul made in the 80s backstage and many high dollar newer ones.

Re: You Have To Buy A New Gibson or PRS - Which Do You Choose?

I happily own and play guitars of both makes. The arbitrary Dollar price limit does not translate favourably into Sterling. (Importer/distributor mark up.) At the time of this writing, I have no 335/345/355 or 175 type guitars. Wouldn't mind one of their acoustics or a carved body mandolin. If pre-owned guitars were allowed, I would go for an early production PRS Custom or the alder-bodied Classic Electric (CE), before that got a maple cap.

Re: You Have To Buy A New Gibson or PRS - Which Do You Choose?

I'd go PRS, because 3 grand couldn't get me an LPC, which is the only Gibson I really drool over, and an SG is a tough sell at $3000.

Re: You Have To Buy A New Gibson or PRS - Which Do You Choose?

I have had a bunch of Paul's USA guitars (including my first; a handmade whale blue 10 top w/birds Custom back when it was "Paul Reed Who"?"). They are fine instruments that do absolutely nothing for me tonally. All sizzle, no steak. Wouldn't keep me from buying another one someday if I had the wherewithal, but for 3 Grand, I am grabbing a used Historic or a certain 74 Les Paul Standard I know of.

Re: You Have To Buy A New Gibson or PRS - Which Do You Choose?

I like PRS but neck/fretboard dimensions don't really fit my hand, I just don't find it comfortable. I love Les Paul's so I would go with which ever one has a 60' neck close to that price.
