Re: Your Favorite Guitar Tones EVER!

Some of my favourite guitar tones are

Pete Townshend's live sound 1969-76.... From 69 to 73 he had used the SG Specials with the P90's thru a customized and heavily modded group of Hiwatt heads, a Supra Fuzz... Added to Pete sound thru the pa is Delay/tape echo in those days. Bobby Pridden used to man the echo machine for Pete's guitar sound... To this day when Pete plays with The Who Bobby is adding Delay sounds during solos and stuff. Pete used his SG's in a very cool way. He used the neck pick up for cleaner tones with the volume backed off to about 2 or 3.... Then on the bridge pickup he kept it flat out... With the flip of a switch he could change to a cleaner sound.. flip to the bridge and it is nicely overdriven.. add a fuzz box for solos and it is a great set up! Nice throaty sound! There is lots of audio examples of Petes SG live years.... Live At Leeds being the best. The 1971 Young Vic Concert on the 2nd disc to Who's Next Deluxe edtion is a fine example of that tone! The Young Vic show is a live rehearsal of a bunch of new songs so it is a little rough for a Who performance... Soon the band should release San Fran 71 i hope.... That show kicks butt! There is 4 tracks from San Fran 71 out offically and they sound amazing!

The mid 70's Townshend tone changed a fair bit in a way.... from 73-79 Pete had started using LP Deluxes and those guitars sounded a bit cleaner and brighter then his SG's did... By 75 Pete had added a Dyna Comp to his fuzz pedals as well as an EQ- Preamp thing sitting ontop of his Hiwatts as well as a reverb unit... If you really compair the recordings from 75/76 and the early 70's there is a big tone difference between them. The Hiwatts remained a part of that sound thru out but his other choices in gear made a difference!

I also love Hendrix's 1969-70 Live tones

Pages How The West Was Won sound is great

Toni Iommi's tone on the 1982 Live Album i like a lot!!!

Alex Lifeson's latest tones i like a lot. I love a lot of his sounds thru out Rush's years... The late 80's over done FX's Solid State amp years are still kind of cool in a way but i'm glad he found PRS's and some nice H&K tube amps again.

Kim Mitchell-This is another Canadian Artist.... His 1981 EP has some killer tones on it. A company called Wounded Bird has released this EP on cd in the USA......

I love 70's Genesis but the Seconds Out cd's i have always loved for the sound!

Tever Rabin's sounds on Yes's 90125 is a fav of mine also....

Adrian Smith's tone. Pretty much any era. The best is probably Brave New World/Dance of Death though.

Re: Your Favorite Guitar Tones EVER!

Forgive my lack of much music knowledge, but heres what I think is the best tone ever.

Eric Clapton - Cream, mainly White Room, Crossroads, and Sunshine of Your Love. The Derek and the Dominos strat tone was great too, so was his tone up until he stopped using Blackie.

Jimi Hendrix - Everything, especially Purple Haze, All Along the Watchtower, Voodoo Child, Little Wing, and the Star Spangled Banner.

SRV - Everything.

Jimmy Page - Dazed and Confused, basicly all of the Led Zeppelin albums, but Dazed and Confused especially...playing with a violin bow I think was an awesome idea.

Eddie Van Halen - Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love, Eruption, and a ton of his other stuff.

Pete Townshend - His live tone from Woodstock and all his live and album work with his SG Special. The clean tone from The Kids Are Alrite as well.

D1ck Dale - Misirlou.

Slash - Appetite for Destruction, the almost Woman Tone of Sweet Child O' Mine.

Dennis Casey (Flogging Molly) - Amazing tone throughout all the Flogging Molly albums, a mix of an overdriven Tele into an Irish style all his own.

Thats all I remember for now.
