Re: Your Favourite Guitar String Brand?

Ernie Balls all the way. A bit more expensive than D'addarios, but worth it.

Dean Markleys are really nice too, but they are too expensive here in Chile.

Re: Your Favourite Guitar String Brand?

Rotosounds for me. Theyre a touch cheaper than EBs (used to use them, but rotos have a smoother touch IMO) and D'addarios and they feel good to me. I don't notice much tonal difference among them, but rotos feel better to me and theyre cheaper.

Re: Your Favourite Guitar String Brand?

Ernie Balls have been treating me well, all the sets of D'Addario's I've had have sucked or broken (i.e. 2 sets, one sucked and the other broke) and none of my EBs have broken on any of my guitars. GHS are okay but EB's are less finnicky with me when I string them up, lol.

Re: Your Favourite Guitar String Brand?

Still playing GHS Progessives, and still Very Very Happy with 'em! :)

Re: Your Favourite Guitar String Brand?

I only have a favourite acoustic string, which is hands down John Pearse. Nobody else comes close.

Truth to tell, I find it hard to tell a difference on electrics. Currently I'm using Ernie Balls on everything cause they're the cheapest, but since D'Addario seems to be the clear winner of this poll, I'm gonna give them a shot.

I use Elixir Nanoweb 10-46. Tone, Tone, Tone-- is what sells me.
I keep thinking I ought to give those a try but they're bloody expensive.

They're just ordinary carbon steel coated in some sort of polymer aren't they? How long DO they last?

Re: Your Favourite Guitar String Brand?

Been playing D'addario's for a long time now, no complaints.

I clean my strings pretty regularly.

Re: Your Favourite Guitar String Brand?

I switched over to the DR Pure Blues awhile back..great strings! Best I've ever used by far! :bigthumb:

Re: Your Favourite Guitar String Brand?

I went from Fender Super Bullets, Ernie Balls, Black Diamond, yet to play Elixers but I do have a pack sitting here. But right now I'm on D'Addarios, and they tickle my fancy very well so I'll probably stick with those.

Re: Your Favourite Guitar String Brand?

I just started using Snake Oil Strings (made and sold by a forumite on The Gear Page) and, despite the recent hype about them over there, they're actually pretty nice strings. Easy to play, big bold tone, and they stay in tune. I can't really ask for more than that.

D'Addario's ,Been useing them for 20 years. Tried a few other brands
But I always go back to D'addario's.

+1 I use the XL 115's on all my electrics and the J 17's on all my acoustics.

Re: Your Favourite Guitar String Brand?

Dean Markley blue steels are my favorite electric strings so far. Nice edgy tone and just the right feel. If they made them in 13-65 guage i would also use them for droptunings but since that gauge isn't available i'll have to stick with everly x-rockers for those low tunings(also nice strings btw).
On accoustic it's DR Rare Phosphor bronze all the way.

At first, the price scares everybody, but the price is not too big an issue when your strings last from 2 (or more) nights on one set playing gigs to if you play casually, last most of a year (allegedly, but I believe it).

They have an ultrathin coating (like tubing) that feel soft, but smooth to the fingers. You take the feel for granted!

The company claims they feel like a normal string, but they don't. Not in a bad way, it's just that smooth feeling is not nomal compared to uncoated strings. Mind you the treble strings are uncoated and still feel smooth.

Lastly, the debatable X-factor is that these strings feel loose after awhile, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but people find it's 'give' in the tension a little too unfamiliar.

I recommend them for at least a one time purchase. Who knows, you might stick with 'em.

Bloody 'ell! They cost ~£8 - £9 /set and have ordinary GBE with no coating??!! Robbing bastards!

Might try that Stringlife stuff...

I knew I shoulda mentioned the treble strings have anti-rust plating, so all six strings have increased resistance to corrosion. Trust me, you will not believe your eyes when you don't see the treble strings corrode in a matter of minutes.

And, I still recommend using a string prolonging solvent just because it'll prolong Elixir Nanoweb strings that much more-- we're talkin' almost 10x life extension!

What happened to me one day was, my low E string broke when I needed to change them any way, and that was like two full months on one set. Do the math, think about it, Earwicker :).

Re: Your Favourite Guitar String Brand?

I can't stand Elixirs. That "magical" coating they have always manages to coat my fingers after a few minutes. And yes, I've still corroded the unwound strings, even faster than other brands like DRs.

I'm still living with the SOS strings. So far, so good. We'll see how long one set can last.

Exscuse me, I'm trying to make a sale here ;)!

Don't get me wrong, I used Elixirs for several months, but I realized what I was getting out of them wasn't equal to what I was spending on them. The went from "slippery" to "gummy" in about two hours of play time for me and I realized that the coating kind of choked the vibration of the string and had an adverse effect on sustain with my guitars.

I'm sure they work great for you, but I have especially corrosive sweat (I guess) and found that strings with more nickel content last a lot longer and sound better for me.
