100 watt amps

Re: 100 watt amps

I get to play through this at work:

I don't know how anybody could stand in front of this thing for an extended period of time. It will rearrange your internal organs at full bore.

Re: 100 watt amps

The VHT performed awesomely. I was running it into my Bogner OS2X12 and it was putting out some serious metal tones. Loved it!

And Sat night was my first gig with the XTC Classic. It was great too... but much more a country and rock amp than a metal one. Since that was in all probability my last country/classic rock gig... I'm likely gonna put the Bogner up for sale and replace it with another amp that can hang with the Ultra Lead. I'm REALLY wanting a Diezel Herbert or VH4... or even the new Hagen... but it's VERY doubtful I'm gonna be able to afford one of those. So I'm also looking at Engls maybe a Mesa Mark V.

You're selling the XTC? I remember a while back you told your wife to never let you sell it, lol!

Funny you mention the VH4 - there's a used one at my local GC. I can check the price tag for you next time I go through for strings. Doesn't hurt to look. Plus, that thing is a beast. I got to play a Schecter 7 string and and a Suhr Classic through it - WOW.

I've heard that Hiwatts are unbearably loud, even moreso than an original Super Lead.

They sound 2x as loud to me - it's because they are so linear. What goes in comes out pretty much unmolested by compression, so there is no real softening of the attack. Brutal amps, Hiwatts.

How do they sound in person? By your description, I imagine they're much more "open" sounding amps compared to, say, a Marshall. Does the lack of compression mean they have less gain?

Yeah - MUCH less gain. They have the kind of OD sound that has this 'barking' midrange grind that quickly dissipates to a very wide and clean freq spread.

Blow me down with a feather.. You used to talk that the XTC was the soundtrack of your soul.. That VHT must be something!
if the XTC isnt metal enough, get the Ubershall.. :naughty:

Sadly, Im not gigging, but based on the sonic fury my QR spits out, I cant imagine running it all out.
I ran my JCM800 1/2 stack and QR halfstack together once and it was sonic fury, but was nearly eargasmic..

WHat the?
Out of everyone whose posts i read on this forum you sing the praises of your amp more than any other. I have read so many post about how good the XTC is and how you have the best rig ever, for any syle of music. I think the only other members whose amps i can think of off the top of my head are fuse and his long journey to get to his deluxe reverb (nice one fuse!), and astro (have you still got that HRD?).
Now you say you have only gigged it once?
Not only that but that after that one gig you are selling it!
Thats too funny!
Whats goint to happen to your TC system?

btw...mesa mark V....pretty amazing amps...

Re: 100 watt amps

oh yeah re: 100 watters.
Yeah for sure. I used to gig a 100w jcm900 for years. It was pretty loud...but not as loud as my friend's 50w 800....so its really about sound preference. I like the headroom of amps with big transformers. I like my bass notes to hold together. Loudness as most of us know is all about the speakers.
Even my main gig amp these days has much bigger transformers than what it puts out. It runs on 6v6s, but the trannies can easily handle 6l6s with a rebias. I still have a 100w marshall combo too. Yes its loud at 6, but it sounds great lower too. I also have a twin reverb (only 85 watts), but yeah headroom is good sometimes.
You dont have to run your guitar volumes wide open anyway....especially if you play clean.
I think people keep calling certain amps too loud because they have this unshakeable belief that for an amp to sound good it must be at the point of power tube breakup. While power tube drive is a cool sound.....its far from being the only or even "best" sound. Getting the best sound is all about how it feels to you, and how it blends with the sound of the band.
100watts then is really just anotehr indicator of what the amp might be capable of tonally, juts like what kind of tubes it runs, what kind of rectifier, what the eq is like etc.

Re: 100 watt amps

This information is often repeated on internet forums, but a 100W amp is only about 3db louder than an equivalent 50W amp (IE JCM2000 50W vs 100W). So the question becomes, "Does anyone play in situations where they really need the clean headroom a 100w amp can produce?"

The answer is yes. Most people playing the heavier types of metal need the clean headroom from the power section, because if the power amp was breaking up, along with the massive amounts of preamp gain used in these types of music, it'd be noise-a-palooza.

I like tube distortion, and I love my hearing! with a 100 watt tube amp, you gotta turn it way up to hear tube breakup. I had a jcm800 2203 100w half stack that I sold cause it was wayyy tooooo looooud and I hated hearing the horrible clipping of my pedals/preamp; not very musical at low volumes. 50w is just right for me, and I have 1/2 power switch on my marshall jcm900 dual reverb. my orange has a built in attenuator :) still gets low end and breakup all at once. the marshall does not have as much low end.

It would be fun to play outdoors with either of these 50w beasts.

Get a regular XTC. Much more versatile than the classic.

100W amps... out of all the small bar gigs I've have seen or played,... a 100w stack just sounds so good.

Re: 100 watt amps

everdrone....i have had a few amps with half power switches and over the years i have had many amps of many different wattages. To me, those half power switches (pentode/triode) seem to just make the amp sound thin. From what i understand about getting different wattages is so you can get the sound you want at whatever volume range you need. I just find that a 100w amp on half power sounds nowhere as good as a 50 watt amp....what do you reckon?

yeah, from what I gather, "powerscaling" is more effective?
Yeah, also, I said I crank my 100 watt Marshall JMP< and I do, but ya got to know there is ample use of that master volume for certain!

I never got to try a 1/2 power switch on a 100w amp. I always think that more wattage sounds better, because I like the low end grunt. but my marshall is waaayyy too loud so I use the 1/2 switch for practice studios. I think it is a very useable switch but it detracts from the sound, but is worth it to hear a little breakup, as opposed to no breakup, when jamming/practicing to me.

My orange with built in attenuator sounds incredible at any level of attenuation, but sounds best unleashed without any attenuation, at full volume. It has bass transformers that go down to 30hz, so the low end is covered.

I always like the sound of 100w tube, cause of the low end grunt, more than lower wattage. I would definitely want a 100w tube half stack for a backyard rock show for 100 people; and I always used half stacks but I could not crank my jcm800 2203 enough, and it does not have that much low end grunt to it. Ive gone to tons of these backyard punk/rock shows, and for punk/rock/hardrock you need at least a 2x12 closed back cab, but almost everyone uses the standard 4x12 closed back cab and a 50w or 100w. I go to live shows every weekend and the outdoor shows are always miked, but unmiked a 50w is fine.

bottom line: attenuator on my orange is awesome, very useable and does not make it thin. I think my marshall does not have as much low end even without the 1/2 switch, so I dont think it gets that much thinner with the 1/2 switch, but I prefer full bore 100watts of tube power as the ultimate rock sound. I am never getting a 100 watt tube amp again, because I love my hearing and it is wayyy too much and I like tube breakup. I dont play backyard rock shows much any more.

Re: 100 watt amps

I agree with Nightburst. Simply offer your XTC Classic for a metal front 101B that matches your cab. Probably a straight trade.

As for 100W amps, especially those with good sounding half power, just tailor the cab to the situation. My 212 is probably the most appropriate for most situations. Or, I can step it up to the Bogner Vin 30 412, or for more crunch, the Marshall AHW 412 with Vin 30/G12-75T criss crossed.

Re: 100 watt amps

i played a big amp for the first time in a while. '69 dual showman reverb thru a loud ass 2x12 cab. it was an outside show in a good size park. i rolled the volume up to 6 and hit a big A chord. the people that were setting up and the dozens of squaking birds all became silent. DAMN!! thats alot of amp
