Amp Sims Vs Tube Amps

FYI...Last day to get on the Neural DSP bandwagon at 50% off!

If you're on the fence about this stuff, download the trial of Nolly, Gojira, or Petrucci to check out for free!

I had to come to terms with it, but I now go direct now with a Line 6 HX stomp with my wedding band, which I use with a few other pedals. I originally got it to replace some other effects on my board, and to add the odd effect that may only be needed for only one song. I originally saw the amp models included as a bonus backup option in case my amp died.

As it turned out, I really loved the amp sounds I could get which was not expected, and after taking time fine tuning it with the band it is now my go-to rig. Monitoring is a dream, the final full sound coming out of our PA is consistent and it sounds good in the context of the wider gig alongside everything else. Loading in/out is also a breeze. Also being able to control multiple parameters with a single button click makes things really easy - and I am that lazy!

I would probably think twice and use my amp if we were not using our own PA system that we have full control over. That said, I do wonder whether using the Line 6 into a cab via an SD Powerstage amp may be equally as good as plugging in direct.

Don't get me wrong, it goes without saying my Mesa combo is hands down better, but I was surprised how good the modelling is - and the audience do not care.

If I was starting from scratch I would probably go for the larger floor board now, but the HX direct with a few other pedals does the job.

I haven’t read the entire thread, so I apologize if this has already been covered.

Finding the right IR makes ALL the difference. Kinda funny, since the cab/speakers/mic makes all the difference with a real amp.

I really love Ola Englund’a The One IR. It’s the 2x12 he uses in all his videos with a few different mic options. It doesn’t make everything sound the same, but makes every metal setup I try sound better.

I have been amp-less since 20...19?

Have had a Helix since 2017, and used it in the loop of my Plexi clone (the one in my profile picture). Then I got a few different FRFRs...
Now I'm using a Kemper.

Honestly, it gets the tone right, but the feel is still not 100% correct. However, it still fucking beats having a head and a 2x12 eat up space and requiring maintenance.

Agreed! Changing these (mic, speaker, cabinet, mic placement) alters sound way more than changing amps. When you have the right IR it does make all the difference.
