Antiquity humbuckers... In a strat??

Who has witnessed this? What kind of sound would that give me in an alder HH strat with a maple neck?

Worth checking out or would the bridge be lacking oomph?
Ooooooor I could do a SSH with something spicy in the bridge.

What kind of music you'll be playing with'em?

What kind of tone you're expecting to get?

Re: Antiquity humbuckers... In a strat??

I play lots of different music (mostly rock) but I have quite a few guitars with different sounds to them, which is nice for studio work, but I want this guitar to sound good enough for most music in a live situation (clean - gain) which is why I thought of the ants. Although I don't think they're potted which may not be a good choice.

I've also considered p90s but I think I'll save that for a mahogany tele

Re: Antiquity humbuckers... In a strat??

I'd think the Antiquitys would sound great because they are great. I love Alnico 2 humbuckers in a Strat.

But I always automatically use a Trembucker for the bridge pickup in a Strat.

An Antiquity neck or Seth Lover neck or Pearly Gates neck and a '78 Trembucker would make for a great sound.

Re: Antiquity humbuckers... In a strat??

Ah yes. I'm glad you mentioned the trembucker though because I wasn't even thinking about it. I wish I could compare an ant or Seth neck bucker to a strat single coil. I like both but I dunno...

BTW Lew, the strat in your avatar is beautiful. That's basically the look this guitar will be.

Re: Antiquity humbuckers... In a strat??

I know i probably sound like a fanboy, but i honestly cant think of a better combination than a set of PG's.

Re: Antiquity humbuckers... In a strat??

If your guitar is not routed for HBs with long legs, ants may be a bit difficult to install... Just saying. Because they have long legs, like 59s Seths and Slash A2Ps...

But they sound great! A hot ant with a fully charged a2 mag in a nice strat could do Van Halen I and II very well...

Nevertheless, I myself am a huge fan of PATB-3 and 59n in a strat. This is followed by a set of PGs...

CHALLENGE COMPLETED!!!

What you see here is my MIM strat, Sonny, with Seymour Antiquity HBs!!! The only difference is that he came with a poplar body, but it should be fairly similar to alder in tone. Sonny came with the stock MIM SCs. I did a full overhaul. The volume is a 300k linear pot while the tones are 500k audio tapers with 0.047 orange drop capacitors. I thought it was bright, hence the volume pot value. YMMV. The tone is nothing short of incredible. The bridge gives some great rock tones, especially classic rock. The neck HB is super sweet and smooth and is hands down the best pickup I have ever heard. Can't lose with this combo my friend. Dr. Barlo is right, you will have to route out some wood to make room not just for the HBs but also for their long legs. You may want to let a tech handle this if you're uncomfortable with it. But the end result is worth it, trust me.

To also touch on what gibson175 said about PGs. I haven't tried a Pearly Gates Neck in any guitar. But I did recently drop a Pearly Gates Bridge in an American Special HSS strat of mine. The SCs are Texas Specials, alder body, maple neck, rosewood fretboard, 250k pots all around and Greasebucket tone circuits (has an extra cap so it rolls off treble w/out adding bass according to Fender). The PG Bridge can be described as nothing short of an excellent choice. Lots of gutsy-attitude while still giving a great clear tone.

Re: Antiquity humbuckers... In a strat??

I've got a similar project going on with a strat.....mine is with some of Zhangbucker's pure handwounds - and I've got short leg baseplates coming, as I feel there's precious little wood there between pickup and trem route as is.

Body is a Squire Classic vibe 50's, neck is a Warmoth.

Awesome! Thanks for the post. It's good to know about the long legs and such BEFORE I order the body. I guess now I need to decide whether a HH or HSS will best suit my needs.
