Are Marshall amps still good??

Re: Are Marshall amps still good??

I tried many amps and bought a JVM. An incredibly versatile amp. Its greatest strength is the classic Marshall overdrive madness, but it's also got very nice clean and high gain sounds. Not sure it's the best for modern 8-string death metal or for country, but it has that sweet upper-mid-heavy Marshall bite and is great for a lot of things. Playing clean, blues, Slayer and Mayhem with it. It's great. To each his own, for me it's Marshall and the JVM delivers. If you're looking for classic rock/metal sound, you can't go wrong with a proper Marshall.
I totally agree.

Re: Are Marshall amps still good??

I have a Marshall 1960A. It was made in 2013. As of 2013, Marshall went back to using plywood backs for their 4x12's instead of MDF, fortunately.

If you open it up, it is pretty evident that the cab is not nearly as well made as an Orange or a Mesa. Not by any means. Many of the screws inside are crooked. They paint the front of the baffle black, but not the inside, and they don't mask it off, so it's all horrendous with black stains and splatter all over. The front baffle is not sealed (that's how Marshall cabs have always been, AFAIK, so it's not necessarily a bad thing). The handles, the jack panel, and corners are plastic. The casters are not particularly heavy duty either.

I must admit, though, the cab itself sounds GREAT, especially under the mic. I replaced the stock speakers because I feel T-75's don't get along with amps that aren't Marshalls (JMO), but pointing a mic into any of the speakers usually gets good results easily. It was the best(ish) cab I could find at local stores, but I would've preferred a 1960AV or a 1960AX or a 1960TV if I had found one here. It is a brighter cab than many others, but that's kinda how it is with Marshall cabs overall.

I mean, the cab itself is not fragile, and, locally, it was the best cab I could find, but it wasn't cheap either! They could have paid more attention to detail, honestly. It doesn't sound like a POS cheap cab, but it sure as hell doesn't look like a high-end cab on the inside either. There's better bang-for-the-buck cabs, IMO.

In my opinion the best bang for the buck 4x12 right now is the EVH. They are about a grand brand new and $600-700 used. They sound great and they are built like tanks. It would cost you the price of a used EVH cab just to get the speakers separately.

Re: Are Marshall amps still good??

It should, but I don't know for sure because I have not tried that exact combination. Perhaps somebody else has. My little Orange sounds great through my Greenback loaded Marshall 4x12.

Re: Are Marshall amps still good??

My friend used to plug his Rockerverb 50 into my Marshall 1960A with 2 G12EVH's and 2 Vintage 30's sometimes, and we both liked it. I think it should be good through all G12EVH's. The Rockerverb is a good head that sounds good through many cabs.

Thanks again, lets say you got the rockerverb and paired it with an Orange 2x12, will that have a serious change on the high gain tones?

A serious changed compared to what? The EVH 4x12? YES. Both are good cabs, but they are voiced completely different.

Re: Are Marshall amps still good??

The 2x12 ought to be less bassy, less open-sounding, and more mid-focused compared to the 4x12.

@Brandenburg

I know, I know. But I really do love it. Maybe it's not the best for everyone, but for me it's awesome, and I believe it's not only me because it's just so versatile.
