Blasphemy ! Gibson did it again

Re: Blasphemy ! Gibson did it again

Thanks for the prompt explanation, 9finger. Couldn't have put it better myself.

Re: Blasphemy ! Gibson did it again

I dunno ... IMO if you're going to make a "modern player's" LP, go all the way. Make the finish exciting, put in some extra switching, stick some chrome Grovers on there, and you've got an interesting guitar. The vintage cosmetics with modern features just seems ... wrong somehow.

Re: Blasphemy ! Gibson did it again

Well genius, that would be because Floyd offers 3 different block lengths. 32, 37, and 42mm. I'm betting Iommi has a 32 on his SG and that was probably still a little too long. So I'd bet, it being Iommi and all, he had his tech grind the block down a bit and re drill the holes for the spring mount.

im a genius? sweet!

btw seriously, thanks for the explanation, i'd have not known otherwise.

Re: Blasphemy ! Gibson did it again

I'm going with the nice idea, now make in funky colours brigade.

I've alwasy rather fancied a go on the old Gibson U2, their one attempt at a superstrat.
Didn't sell well mind :)

Re: Blasphemy ! Gibson did it again

The heel design is probably one of the few smart things they've done on a Les Paul since putting 'buckers on them from a functional/ergonomic point of view :scratchch. Wonder how structurally sound it is, and what the folk at the LP forum think...wait, what's that whining noise?

Re: Blasphemy ! Gibson did it again

I love all the traditional Gibson models - hence my Historic LP Junior that's coming today - but I also think the LP Axcess and most of the GOTM guitars they've put out are refreshingly cool and different.

I couldn't agree more!

I read it's a combination- his Floyd equipped Gibsons- manufactured in the Custom shop- are slightly thicker, AND the block is cut even shorter.

That wouldn't surprise me and actually makes a lot of sense. I wouldn't be surprised if the block wasn't over sized as well. I love Iommi, but I couldn't picture him w/ a Floyded SG for tonal reasons. His tone is a lot of bass and treble w/ scooped mids. SG's aren't naturally bassy in the first place and the Floyd, even being a flat mount, would still bleed some of the low end off. It's the nature of the beast and there's really only 2 ways to fix it. Bass heavy pickups and mass.

All that being said, I like the idea of the Axess. I still think it could have been done better and cheaper. That's just not the Gibson way.

Re: Blasphemy ! Gibson did it again

I like the idea. I'm a Gibson crack-ho and love the traditional stuff, own a 59 Historic, LP Std and a 355, but have been dreaming about a black LP Custom Historic with a gold Floyd for years. Not for shreddy stuff -- okay, once in a while -- but because the Floyd is the only trem I've ever used that really and truly stays in tune, even on subtle stuff. You only have to look at a Bigsby to knock it out of tune.

The neck contour is an idea that's way overdue, and in no way is structurally unsound. It's either a neck-thru or a very deep, well-glued tenon. I could do without the beer belly cut but on the whole, I like the idea.

True.. When I read the reviews of the Epi Iommi, they said (and you can tell from side photos) that the body was thicker on those even.

My understanding is he only uses the Floyded SG's on later Dio/Heaven and Hell material- not classic Sabbath

Re: Blasphemy ! Gibson did it again

"Upon closer examination, however, you’ll find many substantial modifications made..." Really? Never would have guessed! LOL

Re: Blasphemy ! Gibson did it again

The les paul clones that carvin makes is the only one i can think of. Just swap electronics and you'd have a nice guitar. i think.

My thought too.

I do admire Gibson making the tummy cut and smoothing out the neck heel. Makes a better feeling guitar and takes a little weight off.

Re: Blasphemy ! Gibson did it again

Personally, I really like the belly and heel contour...but that Floyd is seriously out of place. LP's are built for tone and sustain, not dive bombing. I'd like if Gibson tried some new ideas that weren't just the old classics getting butchered by new hardware (this model) and electronics (the robot).

Re: Blasphemy ! Gibson did it again

Another vote here for the tummy cut and heel job -(some of the reasons I bought a Dean Hardtail over a Paul a couple of years ago)

Weight relief instead of quality light mahogony is still a cop-out for that price.

If you want a floyd, get a strat.

Re: Blasphemy ! Gibson did it again

Seems like being a rock n roll legend comes with a curse for Gibson - they can't get a break when they try something new and when they stick to their classic models they are blamed for not being innovative.

IMO,
A Les Paul with a Floyd should be in standard production - and in more affordable prices. They should also consider making a bridge only pickup Lester and maybe a set neck mahogany Super-Strat.
