Hey guys. For a christmas present, my old man has offered to help me pay for a project. Since I am selling off all of my big expensive amps, he would like to help me out bydoing a project building my own amp. I have quite a bit of experience working on and modding amps. I have modded my Classic 50 extensively(rewired for a cathode follower preamp stage), and have built my own pedals, and such so the wiring shouldnt be a problem, but I am mre asking whihc direction to go. I would like to build a higher gain amp possibly the Hi-octane from AX84 or the P2. One other possiblity is building a copy of an old tweed champ, princeton, or deluxe and running my tonebone hot british in from of it(probably the deluxe) I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions on possabilities for this project I will be starting up.

This might not be the direction you want to go, but have you considered building a 50 watt Plexi clone? I've thought about doing that myself, and I believe forum member Thames was building one.

both Scott_F and I have built tweed Deluxes (5E3) from Mission Amps
Bruce offers good support, and there is also a forum for support. Quite a few people have built this kit. Bruce has also helped design several kits which are now available on Weber VST's site

Scott_F recently finished his second kit, a tweed Super (5F4?). The next one I'm considering now is the 5E3 X2, which is a "Double Deluxe".

Although you can certainly use an overdrive with a tweed Deluxe, the real beauty of this amp is pure, cranked tube tone, IMO.

some of the more powerful tweed circuits, such as the Bandmaster/ Pro/ Super, etc., may be more suited for pedal use.

Thanks for the help, but I think I am going to go with AX84s Hi-Octane kit, it looks like the best think for me, even though the plexi clone looks interesting, it would seem to be pretty exensive and I dont want to take advantage of his kindness. Also, the volume of a 50 watter would be too much for my apartment so its a no go. Any other tips or things like that would be much apreciated though.

I have a question. Would any of you suggest buying the kit from Dobermanamps.com for the AX84 Hi-octane or just buying the parts separately from mouser and hammond and such. I will be doing the EL34 model by the way.
