Can anyone tell me about Svetlana tubes?

Re: Can anyone tell me about Svetlana tubes?

If you need good 6L6 tubes for the Mesa SPEND THE MONEY...get a set of SED Winged C 6L6's.

Just do it.

Will they last a good deal longer than the cheaper stuff? I don't have much money on hand and I'm trying to pay off this school debt. That said, I will spend the money if it will be worth it.

Re: Can anyone tell me about Svetlana tubes?

I won't suggest TAD tubes any longer since I had a LOT of issues with them and got NO support from TAD and FWIW, I wouldn't use a short bottle GB in that amp anyway...

IMHO yes they are worth the extra $$...the winged C SED's are IMHO the best new 6L6 you can get.

If they are out of range price wise look at the bog bottle 6L6GC from Tung Sol...

Re: Can anyone tell me about Svetlana tubes?

I've been wanting to try the new sensor/tung-sol 7581's, they look just like the new sensor svetlana though, so I dunno.

I like the TAD 6L6GC, and I haven't had any trouble with the set I've got, but they haven't had a ton of use, and I keep seeing bad things said. My understanding is that the ruby M-STR/Mesa 440 and the TAD are basically the same tube, just the TAD has the black plates and Sylvania styled getters. Same Chinese factory.

BTW, =C= are the real svetlana's, before new sensor stole the name. Those are supposed to be the best of the new tubes. Mesa sold them for a minute as STR454 and supposedly had reliability issues, but id bet it was more due to costs.

my boogie has old Sylvania 387's in it. No idea what I'll do when they croak.

Re: Can anyone tell me about Svetlana tubes?

Svetlana 12AX7
They are some kind of refinated JJ ECC83S tubes. They sound silky and even "angelical" with nice sparkling and chimey tones but, with a nice and smooth roll off in high end content. They are less gainy than JJs and, less gainy than EH. Have a nice cruch and I like them more than JJs but, less than other interesting tubes, as the Mullard RI.
I don't prefer them in V1 but, work awesome in V2 and other positions.
Very variable production batches!.

Svetlana C-Wing EL34's
Marshall sound. Period!.

Re: Can anyone tell me about Svetlana tubes?

Ask about tubes and you will immediately get stories from guys about how "bad" a certain brand is. I guarantee you, in ALL cases, it is some guy that had troubles with 2 sets of tubes. Who cares.
The real story is what happens when 10,000 are sold.
TAD
New Sensor
JJ...
they will all have guys complaining about how crappy they are and that you should never buy them.
If money is an issue, buy a set you can affords from:
KCA
Dougs
Tube Depot
Tube Store
and see what happens.
ANY tube brand can die just a few minutes after use. THAT is how it it now days. Any legitimate tube dealer or decent music store will refund your money if a new tube dies.
Good Luck

Re: Can anyone tell me about Svetlana tubes?

Winged C 6L6's made my Mesa Mk IV sound the best it ever did in the 17 years I owned it. A wonderful tube.

Re: Can anyone tell me about Svetlana tubes?

Have to agree with zzmoore.

I've had no problems with my TADs in 3-4 years of not quite regular usage. They sound much more like the 387's I like than the 6L6EH or JJ.

Herm, are you talking about the real Svetlanas? Or the New Sensor variation of the TS/EH? The real Svets have a bad reputation (again, internets rumor) and are hard to find. I think Marshall used them for a while.

Re: Can anyone tell me about Svetlana tubes?

I'm talking about the current New Sensor stuff. I just wonder because I like EHs, Mullards, Tung Sols, all from New Sensor, so maybe I would like the reissued Svetlanas, don't know.

Re: Can anyone tell me about Svetlana tubes?

I'm sure they're fine Andrew, I haven't seen anything negative about them moreso than any other new sensor tube. My only deal is that I think it's hackish to steal another company's name for profit, but hey, welcome to America.

Re: Can anyone tell me about Svetlana tubes?

I have Svetlana EL34s in my Komet and they sound amazing. But IMHO most of the tone comes from the pres not the power tubes. I have a set of old Bugle boy Pres in my Komet and they rock! I am getting ready to put a new set in my Shiva This will also get Svetlana EL34's..... unless my amp tech recommends something else. Richie has never steered me wrong so I rely on him to tell me what he feels will work...

I thought new sensor was a russian company?

Are you using the real svets or the new sensors though? Therein lies the problem.

New Sensor bought the rights to all the names for marketing in the US. The tubes are all made in the Sovtek factory, and aren't all that different.

Re: Can anyone tell me about Svetlana tubes?

They are based out of Russia but Electro Harmonix owns them.

I know Mike Matthews owns both but not sure what the actual relationship is. Either way purchasing of of old brand names and reusing them is far from unique to America.
