Ok Christian and Luke keep hounding me that I can't handle 2 8's in the BMR. Personally I don't see the point, but these fools seem to think i am not cool enough. I could VERY easily cut a new baffle and cram some 8's in there. Part of my tinkering side wants to do it just to see what it would be like, but then again it would just be more money to spend. I am really kind of torn.

I am asking your opinion. Can I handle the 8's or not?

If you are lost I am talking about putting 8" speakers into a Bandmaster Reverb head.

i think it would be sweet, nice little compact amp to use.

Re: Can I really handle the 8's ?????????

I say do it!!

Momma always said I couldn't handle the V-8! You have a chance to!!

Re: Can I really handle the 8's ?????????

If it was your only amp, I think the 8's would be a good idea - it would be a pretty good grab-and-go combo when you didn't want to carry your cab. This would be especially advantageous if you had the "real man's" cab - the Bandmaster 2-12 instead of tha weenie Boogie cab.

However, since you already have the 'lux, I don't see much benefit to adding the 8's. Leave the BMR where you're going to play it most, and take the 'lux with you everywhere else.

And for God's sake, get rid of that Boogie. [Subliminal]You want Xssive's Bandmaster cabinet! Xssive will give you a good deal on his Bandmaster cabinet! Xssive is your friend! A weekend road trip to LI to meet Xssive and compare DIY pedals would be big fun! [/Subliminal]

Re: Can I really handle the 8's ?????????

I didn't vote, because I don't think Luke or Christian are douche bags.

Here are some things to consider first.

Have you done any listening/playing to find out if you'll like 8" speakers before you install them?

While there is plenty of room on the front for the 8x2 config, are you going to have to move, or possibly remove, the reverb tank to make it work? I ask because I'm not sure, but if so, are you willing to do this?

Also, consider the effect the modifications will have on resale value. You've probably said somewhere that you're never selling this. But there's nothing you can say to convince me of that. :p

Re: Can I really handle the 8's ?????????

It'd make a really cool amp to take to gigs or jams.

I'm not sure how it'd work for your style, but I say go for it.

Re: Can I really handle the 8's ?????????

How about an option of just voting Luke and Christian are douchebags and no opinion on the 8s?

Re: Can I really handle the 8's ?????????

Why would want to kill the value in an amp that is only going to increase in value? I say it's not too good an idea. The ONLY way I'd agree is to have a replacement baffle built to spec and keep the original one in the closet somewhere.

Why not just buy a new head shell and work it into that. This way you can keep the original shell............. original!

Re: Can I really handle the 8's ?????????

A waste of time and money, and 8's have very little bass response. You'd probably blow them out as soon as you turn the amp past 3.

If I were you, I'd sell the Mesa cab, and parlay the money into a vintage Fender cab like the one XXSIVE has. Have him box it up and send it. Then, put good Eminence speakers in it, if the stock ones don't sound good enough.

Thbbtttt.

Make a cab out of like 8 Pignose amps. It's gonna sound AWESOME!!!

Re: Can I really handle the 8's ?????????

Greg you KNOW you can't handle the 8s! I couldn't vote that just Christian is a douche bag, so I voted we both were.........then I remembered I'm a douche.

I didn't see that option Dave! :bigok:

????

SF Fenders? Besides it's not like he's going to cut up the baffle-like thing in there.

This brings up a good point, anyone else noticed BFs are going down in price?

Luke

Greg can't handle the 8s!

Re: Can I really handle the 8's ?????????

Somebody did the exact same thing on my Showman Reverb. That's partially why I was able to pick it up for $400...

They used some high-powered eminence 8's in there. Good bass response, though a bit beamy. I yanked em out for two reasons though: 1) They added too much weight to the head 2) I was concerned about the speaker's close proximity to the tubes. In the end I picked up a cheap vintage 2X10, popped in a couple of Eminence Lil' buddies, and I'm usin it with that now. And I dig it ;).

What makes you think that BF's are going down in value? Maybe I'm just missing something, but I'm seeing the BF amps (esp reverbs) as pretty expensive at this point.

And SF Fenders might go up in value at some point; even if they don't they're not going to lose value tremendously...well unless you mod them with 8's, lol. I think Scott was just making sure he didn't destroy the resale value by cutting on the original 'baffle'.

When the SRV craze was in full force you couldn't ask ENOUGH for BF Fenders in any condition. Nowadays the prices are "more" reasonable. I saw lots of BF Deluxes, Supers, and Twins for well over 2K. Now I can tell where there's a shop with two decent Supers one with a sticker of 1600, the other 1400. Supposedly both work and sound great, I only heard the $1600 one.

The thing is that SF Bandmasters, Bassmans, and Dual Showmans will never be worth what the Supers, Deluxes, Princetons, and Twins. Not to say they shouldn't, but our heros didn't really play those and the market responds appropriately.

I wouldn't advocate Greg cutting up the original one with lumber as cheap as it is.

Luke

Re: Can I really handle the 8's ?????????

1- Luke and Christian are the coolest guys on this whole forum except for maybe Seymour

2- Silverface bandmaster Reverbs (or pretty much ANY SF Fender) will NEVER be a super high dollar amp (like a BF, Brown, Blond or Tweed)

3- No matter what anybody says Greg can't handle the 8's and he shouldn't even bother trying...all he's gonna do is complain about it when it's done and blame me for even bringing it up to him, so for the love of God please don't put any speakers in the BMR.
