CAR question

...so I know back in the day fender used two bases for candy apple red... silver and gold each, at some points.

Now I've noticed there seems to be two ways CAR can age... either it goes to a dank, horrible purple color, or it goes to a really cool copper type color.

So, is the base color related to that? My MIJ Jag is with a silver base... wondering how it'll look in 20 years Or will the paint never, ever age because it's poly :laugh2:

It'll never age.

My 77 strat has a silver base coat and it looks as red as a new strat. :burnout:

See if there's anything here or here that might help. It's a lot of reading, but it's pretty informative. A lot of info about vintage colors.

I know it talks about things like the clearcoat yellowing and changing the color of the guitar. It seems like there was something about the reds, but I don't remember.

My 88 American Standard strat started out as either a Shoreline Gold or an Inca Silver finnish... i can't tell as the metal flakes have turned the finnish Green... it was most likely the Shoreline gold finnish originaly but these days it is greenish.... kind of looks like Ginger Ale pop colour.... weird.... so i imagine the CAR finnishes must be doing the same under the red

seems to say CAR with the silver base turns the cool copper color :smokin:

so the shell of finish left behind sitting next to all the nuclear waste and ****roaches will be that... and glowing :laugh2:

I've never done a CAR finish on a guitar. But I helped a buddy do one years ago on a 66' Mustang . We used gold as a base coat. The real trick was getting right amount of red on, And keeping it even. Not enough red you get Tangerine. One coat to much... you get raspberry.:smack: It occurred to me that Silver would be a better base coat to work with, But it seems most CAR reds are formulated to work over Gold? I don't know the reason? But there must be one?
