Clean Boost Question

If i want to get a good volume boost for solos using a clean boost, do i need to put it after distortion pedals or in the effects loop so it is after the preamp?

Re: Clean Boost Question

It depends how you're running your amp - clean or distorted. If you're running distortion pedals into a clean amp, putting the clean boost after your distortion will probably work. If you're achieving distortion with your pre-amp, then putting a clean boost in front of it will increase the gain (more distortion, very little if any volume boost), so you're better off putting the clean boost in the FX loop.

Re: Clean Boost Question

I'm using the distortion from my pedals into a clean amp ... so do you think a clean boost after the pedals would work? If so could you recommend a good clean boost? I'm looking at the eh nano lpb because it isn't to expensive so it's no big loss if it's not quite what i'm looking for.

So I push my distorted Laney AOR with Spina's TS9 and you are saying that if I put an SD's pick up booster as a first thing after a guitar I will not have just a jump in volume but just get even more break-up?

That is correct yes, more gain but very little extra volume. You could put the Pickup Booster in the Laneys FX loop (if it has 1) and that will boost the volume alot better than running the pedal into the front of the amp

As for the original question, I currently use OD pedals into a clean amp (Carlsbro 50 Top) and having a Fulltone Fat Boost at the end of the FX chain just before the amp lifts the volume considerably for solos.

I've also tried this exact same method when using my Orange AD30, which is set slightly crunchy, and the volume boost isn't anywhere near as apparent as it is on the clean amp.

Re: Clean Boost Question

Try both and see which one works best for you. My opinion: get a SD Clean Boost or whatever the pedal name is, and put that right after your guitar.

Re: Clean Boost Question

A boost will push everything after it in the signal chain. Putting any form of gain, including an OD pedal or the amp's natural OD, after the boost will cause the gain to increase. If the amp is clean and you put the boost after any OD pedals, the boost will be a cleaner jump up. If you put the boost between your pre-amp and power amp stages, you'll boost the power stage, not the pre stage.

The boost I use is a Keeley Time Machine Boost, which is probably way more than you need. I suggest looking into a Boss BD-2 Blues Driver. It's a great multi-purpose pedal, and I'll bet you'll find yourself using it in more ways than just one.

Re: Clean Boost Question

Take a look at Boss LS-2 ... couple of clean boost/cut knobs for the different loops. Has an impressive number of choices.

Re: Clean Boost Question

Than I guess its back to the Volume pedal for me, as I just want an increase for the leads .... I am happy with my rythm tone as my leads settings as well I just want it louder to come out over the rest of the band.

Then, recommendations:
1) Use the guitar's volume knob and keep the amp up higher, or...
2) If the problem is caused by other instrumentalists turning up their amps, either they need to understand that you're the lead guitar (or whatever), or they need to be kicked off the band if they refuse to cooperate. There can only be one lead, and they need to understand that a band is formed and maintained by cooperation, not everyone trying to be the loudest. Loud is cool, but there are degrees of loud.

Re: Clean Boost Question

Well, I could never get enough out of my volume knob, even with the Invader(am I a freak?) the thing is I am a didicated "Solo-guy" but we are a twin guitar band, so a lot of times my bro plays parts that include single note licks, pick harmonics and bends, during verses/choruses/bridges and some leads as well. But most of the time I am the "here is guitar solo" guy, so I do needt he extra push because with all of that in mind we will have keyboards, and a loud drummer as we are partially influenced by modern Euro Powermetal. Is there a volume pedal that you set to specific level of "push" during the sound check for example, and once you stomp it just takes it to that "set" level and off after another stomp?

You're saying that you can't use the volume knob to drop your volume when not soloing?

Re: Clean Boost Question

Not exeactly, when I roll the volume on its not enough ....

You can't set everything for max volume with guitar at 10 volume (i.e. the max) and then play rhythm stuff by dialing down to 7 on volume on the guitar?

That seems to work for me, just wondering if it would work for you.

Actually, that is exeactly where I have my volume knob, 7-8, perfect for my rythm and leads, love it. Once I take it to 10 to cut through, the increase is not enough and things get a little muddy ...

Well then find a way to get your max volume at 10. You might need a better amp, different settings on your pedals, etc. That, and honestly, maybe a swift kick in the rear for anyone drowning you out will help, since you're supposed to be the lead guitar, and they're not the lead. If there are two lead guitars, ok then, but then you should both be the same volume at max, etc.

I'm kinda in the same boat, the solo guy. My other guitarist and i pretty much play at the same level so i need a good boost to put me over the top. Originally i was thinking about the morley little alligator volume pedal because you can set the minimum level and otherwise it acts exactly like a volume pedal, but i didn't hear to great of theing about it. I then turned to clean boosts and a like the looks of the electro harmonix nano lpb because it is cheap but i cant find much info on it.

Re: Clean Boost Question

SD Pickup booster can be a good clean boost if it's in the chain after the distortion pedals. it's pretty easy on the wallet too, which is nice
